Sheffield Wednesday make decision on Pierce Charles’ future, it’s a poor call

Sheffield Wednesday may be in store for a busy final few days of the summer transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday have already been active in this summer’s transfer window, having signed 10 new players in total.

But after a poor start to the 2024/25 Championship season, the Owls hierarchy may be keen on adding a few more names before the August 30th transfer deadline.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Shea Charles on loan from Southampton, per reports, whilst striker target Mark O’Mahony looks set to join Portsmouth on loan from Brighton.

A striker may be a priority for Danny Rohl then, along with a centre-back with options light in that position, and the likes of Dominic Iorfa failing to impress of late.

There’s also a few player exits to weigh up at Hillsborough.

It’s claimed that Lincoln City are in talks to sign Bailey Cadamarteri on loan, whilst the Owls are open to letting Callum Paterson leave the club.

There’s also been loan interest in Pierce Charles this summer.

Pierce Charles latest at Sheffield Wednesday

Charles, 19, looked poised to head out on loan this summer, after making his first-team debut for the Owls last time round.

Crawley made an enquiry to sign Charles on loan this summer. But Sheffield Wednesday quickly knocked back that approach following the injury to Ben Hamer.

Subsequently, Northern Ireland U19s man Charles has been featuring on the bench in Championship games and starting Carabao Cup games.

He’s likely to start in goal vs Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

But Joe Crann says that Charles is unlikely to head out on loan this summer, though a National League loan move could be explored at a later date.

Pierce Charles decision is a poor one from Sheffield Wednesday

Charles certainly looks like a real prospect in the Sheffield Wednesday team.

A with current no.1 James Beadle only on loan, Rohl will need a new no.1 next time round, and it could well have been Charles if he was sent out on loan to gain experience this summer.

But instead, when Hamer returns, Charles will be back to playing youth football.

Having received enquiries, there’s been the opportunity for Charles to go out on loan.

But Rohl and the staff are determined for Charles to go somewhere where he’ll be playing the same style of play that he is at Sheffield Wednesday.

Whilst that’s understandable, finding such a club lower down in the Football League will be tough, and for Charles, simply going out on loan, making some saves and gaining some experience would’ve been hugely beneficial at his young age.

Sheffield Wednesday could, in the future, have a very valuable asset on their hands in Charles, and if it meant signing another free agent goalkeeper this summer so that Charles could’ve gone out on loan, they should’ve done so.
