Sheffield Wednesday agree deal to sign Southampton man Shea Charles on loan
Now, it’s reported that Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on a deal to sign Southampton’s defensive midfielder Shea Charles on a season-long loan.
Former Manchester City youngster Charles, 20, signed for Russell Martin’s Southampton in a £15million deal last summer, going on to feature 33 times in the Championship.
He helped the Saints win promotion to the Premier League but now looks to be out of contention.
The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell has now revealed that Charles is ‘set to join’ Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan deal.
Shea Charles is just what Sheffield Wednesday need right now
Last season in the Champiohip, Charles managed 1.1 tackles-per-game and 0.7 interceptions-per-game.
His numbers are similar to Will Vaulks‘ last season, albeit slightly lower with Charles having played a bit more of a back-up role for Southampton.
But it shows that Charles can man the midfield in the same way that Vaulks did, and it’ll be a welcome signing for Sheffield Wednesday who were cut apart by Sunderland last weekend.
Charles doesn’t look set to sign in time for the Leeds game, but Rohl may be hoping to have him in and ready to feature against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
It could be a good game for Charles to get to grips with the playing style under Rohl.
