Middlewood Road has remained as Sheffield Wednesday’s training ground since the 1980s. The Owls sought to build the facilities to give their players a purpose-built site for the first time in their history.

Sheffield Wednesday had earlier embraced an array of venues around the Steel City as their training ground. The Owls even used to run on the streets of Sheffield and around the edges of their pitch at Hillsborough in their early years. While Sheffield Wednesday’s academy also use Middlewood Road.

Sheffield Wednesday training ground name

The name of Sheffield Wednesday’s training ground, Middlewood Road, simply stems from the site’s location. It is set on Middlewood Road, just under half a mile down the River Don from Hillsborough.

How many pitches are there at Middlewood Road?

Sheffield Wednesday have access to two grass pitches at their Middlewood Road training ground. It also features one artificial 4G surface and an indoor ‘dome’ facility. But Sheffield Wednesday’s first-team squad rarely train on the artificial surfaces, which are mainly designated for their youth teams.

What other facilities do the Owls have at their training ground?

The size of the complex on which Sheffield Wednesday’s training ground sits makes plans to expand Middlewood Road challenging. But the Owls also have access to an array of modern facilities at their base. Several managers have sought to update and renovate the facilities available at their disposal.

Dejphon Chansiri, Sheffield Wednesday’s owner, has invested millions to install upgrades like the 4G pitch at Middlewood Road. He also funded their installation of a swimming pool, plus state-of-the-art fitness and medical equipment. But more will be required if the Owls make it into the Premier League.

Where have Sheffield Wednesday trained in the past?

The early years in Sheffield Wednesday’s history as a club also saw the Owls train at The Peacock overlooking Totley. It served as their base in the late 1880s and 1890s but was never their permanent residence. While Sheffield Wednesday also later used the Thorncliffe sports ground as another base.
