But Sheffield Wednesday’s first-team squad rarely train on the artificial surfaces, which are mainly designated for their youth teams.

Dejphon Chansiri, Sheffield Wednesday’s owner, has invested millions to install upgrades like the 4G pitch at Middlewood Road. He also funded their installation of a swimming pool, plus state-of-the-art fitness and medical equipment. But more will be required if the Owls make it into the Premier League.

The early years in Sheffield Wednesday’s history as a club also saw the Owls train at The Peacock overlooking Totley. It served as their base in the late 1880s and 1890s but was never their permanent residence. While Sheffield Wednesday also later used the Thorncliffe sports ground as another base.
