One Sheffield Wednesday gem has been handed a deserved under 21 international call up.
Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to build off the back of a brilliant defensive display against Bristol City as they face off with Coventry City in the Championship this weekend.
There were many standout performers in defence for the Owls in their midweek draw which saw them get a clean sheet on the road, and Di’Shon Bernard was undoubtedly at the forefront of that after an assured performance at the back for Danny Rohl’s side.
On the other hand, there were concerns once again surrounding Sheffield Wednesday going forward on the attack, and Canadian international attacker Ike Ugbo has been labelled as the figure who is at fault for not proving much of an impact at striker.
Aside from Ugbo’s poor performance, which as a result could see him dropped for either Michael Smith or Jamal Lowe, there was plenty for Rohl to build on, and one defensive display in the side has contributed to a well deserved international call up.
James Beadle handed England U21 international call up after brilliant Sheffield Wednesday display
Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper James Beadle was certainly another figure in the Owls starting side that helped Rohl’s side to just their second clean sheet in the 2024/25 Championship season, and it helped the side to Rohl’s first ever away draw since his arrival last campaign.
As a result, he has fully deservedly been called up to the England U21 squad alongside fellow young goalkeepers James Trafford and Sam Tickle.
Whilst at times Beadle has not quite been at his best form, the Owls keeper has clarified that he doesn’t believe that he has been at the peak of his powers, however he certainly showed class in the draw against Bristol City.
International call ups show the prestige in Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper union
Beadle’s call up to the England U21’s means that he joins fellow Owls youngster Pierce Charles, who was awarded with a senior international call up alongside his brother Shea Charles.
19-year-old goalkeeper Charles, who has been given game time in Rohl’s side in cup competitions up until this point, impressed in a previous U21 call up for Northern Ireland as he kept a clean sheet against England, helping him earn his first senior call up.
The strides that Sheffield Wednesday’s goalkeepers have undergone so far this season has been shown in the tangible product of an international call up for each of them, and it is clear that they are both developing into ‘excellent’ good shot-stoppers.
Sheffield Wednesday’s two goalkeepers will hopefully continue their development at such a brilliant pace, especially Charles, who could certainly be the successor to Beadle next season after the end of his loan spell at the club.
