Former Sheffield Wednesday manager enduring nightmare start to season, fans want him out

A former Sheffield Wednesday manager is facing the full force of fans’ criticism following a dire start to the season.

Danny Rohl is the man in charge at Sheffield Wednesday right now, and without doubt, he’s the club’s most popular manager since Carlos Carvalhal.

Although Sheffield Wednesday fans have been critical of Rohl at times this season, he continues to show his innovative ways.

Last time out, Rohl guided Wednesday to an upset in the Championship, beating West Brom 3-2 at Hillsborough to end a run of five league games without a win.

There’s still a long way to go this season. And for Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday, there’s still a long road ahead before we can realistically start talking about promotion to the Premier League.

But Rohl certainly marks an upgrade in Sheffield Wednesday managers during Dejphon Chansiri’s reign at the club.

There’s been some really poor appointments in previous years. One who had little success with the club was Garry Monk, who’s now in charge of Cambridge United

Garry Monk enduring tough start to season with Cambridge United

Monk was in charge of Sheffield Wednesday between September 2019 and November 2020, leaving the season that Wednesday were relegated to League One.

He left with a win rate of 31% which is the third-lowest of any of Chansiri’s managers; behind Tony Pulis and the winless Xisco Munoz.

Earlier this year, Cambridge United appointed Monk who spent almost four years out of the game.

He guided the U’s to safety in League One last time round. But this time round, it’s a completely different story.

Cambridge sit in dead last of the third tier table with just one point to their name after the opening eight games of the season.

On Tuesday night, Monk was shown a red card as his side lost 1-0 at home to Rotherham United, with many U’s fans making their feelings known on X after the game.

Danny Rohl marks huge change in focus at Sheffield Wednesday

Like so many teams have done in the past, Sheffield Wednesday were in a habit of appointing names who seemed like a steady pair of hands, but not the answer long-term.

The likes of Steve Bruce, Monk, Pulis, and even Darren Moore fell into those categories. Rohl though was a roll of the dice from Chansiri.

And it’s one that’s paid dividends too. He’s a young and innovative coach who, whilst still learning, has set up the club for a very bright future.

It seems unlikely that we’ll see any Monk-like appointments at S6 down the line, with Chansiri having set the bar high with Rohl.
