Former Sheffield Wednesday boss lands new job after four years out of management

A former Sheffield Wednesday manager has returned to management after a four-year hiatus.

Danny Rohl is the current manager at Sheffield Wednesday.

He’s the club’s second permanent boss of this season and the third permanent one in the last 12 months, with Xisco Munoz and Darren Moore his predecessors.

The Owls have had more than their share of managers over the past several years; under Dejphon Chansiri, all of Stuart Gray, Carlos Carvalhal, Jos Luhukay, Steve Bruce, Garry Monk, Tony Pulis, Moore, Munoz, and Rohl in charge.

And one of those names has now made a shock return to management.

Cambridge United appoint Garry Monk

Four years since he left Sheffield Wednesday, Monk has taken charge of League One outfit Cambridge United.

It’s Monk’s first job since he left Hillsborough back in 2020 following a mostly unsuccessful spell in charge of the Owls.

In total, Monk oversaw 58 games and won 18 of them, eventually leaving with a win percentage of 31.03%; only Pulis and Munoz have lower win rates from the Chansiri era of managers.

Monk arrived in South Yorkshire shortly after the start of the 2019/20 season where he replaced Bruce who left for Newcastle United.

The Owls finish 16th that season but were relegated the following year, with Monk sacked in the November when the Owls were sitting in 23rd.

Now though, Cambridge United have appointed 44-year-old Monk on a deal until the summer of 2026 after losing Neil Harris to Millwall.

Sheffield Wednesday fans may have keen eye on Monk at Cambridge

It’s always interesting to see how former bosses fare in new jobs, and expect fans of Monk’s former clubs; Swansea City, Leeds United, Middlesbrough, Birmingham City, and Sheffield Wednesday, to keep an eye on how Monk does with Cambridge United.

He’s been out of the game for a long time now and Cambridge United doesn’t seem like the easiest place for him to resurrect his managerial career, with the U’s currently sitting in 19th place of the League One table having lost six out of their last seven in the league.

Cambridge United in their announcement of Monk say that he’s had opportunities to come back into management since leaving Sheffield Wednesday, but that he’s been waiting for the right one.

And Monk may well have been working hard on his tactical knowledge, coaching abilities and whatnot over the past four years, so we could see a rejuvenated manager here.

His first game is at home to Northampton Town in League One this weekend.
