A Sheffield Wednesday youngster has been given a senior international call up ahead of the October international break.

Football will take a break later this month for international fixtures to take place.

There was an international break in September and there’s another in November. But for Sheffield Wednesday, they’ve been coming at handy times.

Last month, the international break came at a good time for Danny Rohl’s side who’d just lost 3-0 against Millwall in the Championship.

Since the return of football, the Owls have lost just once, drawing twice and winning once; the 3-2 win against West Brom at Hillsborough.

As things stand, Sheffield Wednesday sit in 19th place of the Championship table and play Coventry City away from home this weekend, before returning to action two weeks later with a visit from Burnley.

As ever, Rohl will be keeping a close eye on matters on the training ground, and also on his first-team player jetting away on international duty.

Pierce Charles handed Northern Ireland call-up

Rohl has a few players who are regular internationals now, including Di’Shon Bernard and Jamal Lowe for Jamaica.

There’s also a handful of youngsters who represent their countries at youth level, one being Pierce Charles.

The 19-year-old Owls academy goalkeeper has become a regular first-team player this season, playing no.2 to James Beadle but starting games in the Carabao Cup, after being linked with a loan exit during the summer.

This season, Charles has played for the Northern Ireland U19s and U21s. But this month he’ll represent his nation’s senior team.

Michael O’Neill has selected Charles, along with brother Shea, for Nations League games against Belarus and Bulgaria.

During the summer, Charles was named in the senior side for the first time, though he didn’t make an appearance.

Pierce Charles nod is an ode to Sheffield Wednesday academy

Sheffield Wednesday are starting to churn out some really exciting players, and Rohl will hope that it long continues.

Charles, Bailey Cadamarteri, Sean Fusire and Joey Phuthi are a few names who’ve made their mark, with others knocking on the door of the first-team too.

It looks unlikely that Charles will play for Northern Ireland this month with former Owls loan man Bailey Peacock-Farrell the no.1.

But it’s great experience nonetheless, and a credit to Sheffield Wednesday and their academy to have a player representing his nation at senior level already.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Coventry City kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
