Sheffield Wednesday now face a significant period of time without one of their key players for this season so far.

Sheffield Wednesday played against Brentford on Tuesday night, live on Sky Sports as the Owls took the Bees all the way to penalties.

Brentford won the shoot-out 5-4. But there were a number of positives for the Owls to take from the game, including Pierce Charles’ Man of the Match performance.

Elsewhere, there was praise for Sean Fusire in the Sheffield Wednesday midfield, whilst fans on social media were particularly impressed with Gabriel Otegbayo at the back as well.

It’s a return to league action this weekend with Watford visiting Hillsborough, and kicking off a hectic three game week which finishes with a Steel City derby at Bramall Lane.

One player who won’t be featuring that game is Akin Famewo.

Danny Rohl confirms Akin Famewo’s ‘big’ injury at Sheffield Wednesday

Famewo was forced off for Sheffield Wednesday in the win at Portsmouth last Friday, picking up what looked like a thigh muscle injury.

Rohl spoke cautiously about Famewo’s injury after the game. Then after the defeat at Brentford, Rohl confirmed that the centre-back has suffered a ‘big’ injury and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Owls boss told The Star: “No, it is not good. We speak about months at the moment. It is a big one.”

Olaf Kobacki is also sidelined for Sheffield Wednesday and could spend a couple of months injured, whilst Nathaniel Chalobah looks set to make his return in the coming weeks.

Sheffield Wednesday contract talks for Akin Famewo bound to be put on hold

Earlier this season, it was revealed that Sheffield Wednesday wanted to hand Famewo a new contract.

His current deal expires at the end of this season, but this latest injury blow surely means that those contract talks are tabled until Famewo makes his return to action.

It’s a bitter blow for the 25-year-old who was arguably in the form of his life up until his injury at Fratton Park.

Thankfully though, Rohl has some good options in back-up; Dominic Iorfa, Max Lowe who played in the middle against Brentford, and Otegbayo too.

Sheffield Wednesday against Watford kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
