Sheffield Wednesday defender Akin Famewo was forced off during the first half of the win at Portsmouth on Friday night.

Akin Famewo has been one of the best performers for Sheffield Wednesday so far this season, and very much against expectations.

The 25-year-old proved hit and miss among fans last time round, featuring 35 times in the Championship but never really holding down a starting spot.

Then in pre-season, Famewo was featuring heavily. He missed the start of the campaign with a minor knock but has now made eight Championship appearances, proving to be impressive.

Out of contract next summer, Sheffield Wednesday want to hand Famewo a new deal following his strong start.

But the Englishman has been dealt a real setback after he was forced off during the first half against Portsmouth.

Famewo went down, holding his thigh muscle and limping off with what looked like a nasty injury.

The Owls eventually came from behind to win 2-1, with Michael Smith scoring a wonder goal for Sheffield Wednesday who now sit in 11th place of the Championship table.

Danny Rohl shares Akin Famewo injury update after Sheffield Wednesday vs Portsmouth

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Danny Rohl was quizzed on Famewo’s injury, which he said ‘may be a big injury’.

Rohl went on to add: “It looks like a muscle injury. Muscle is always; it could be two weeks, but it could also be eight weeks.

“Let’s see in the following days.”

Famewo was replaced by Dominic Iorfa who put in a solid shift alongside Di’Shon Bernard, with Liam Palmer also coming into the defensive middle-three for the game at Fratton Park.

A chance for Dominic Iorfa following Akin Famewo injury

As Famewo now looks set to be on the sidelines for a while, Iorfa comes back, following his spell out with an injury.

The long-serving Sheffield Wednesday man is another who’s held in high regards by Rohl and by Wednesday fans on the whole.

Iorfa is a well-liked player and his athleticism could really serve the Rohl style of play at well.

It’s a huge chance for Iorfa, of course. But Rohl will be praying that his defenders don’t pick up another injury.

Palmer has just come back from injury himself. Bernard is somewhat prone to injuries, with another international break coming up as well, whilst Iorfa has had more than his share of injuries over the past few years too.
