Championship manager reveals talk with Danny Rohl after transfer interest in Sheffield Wednesday man

One Championship manager has expressed his previous interest in a Sheffield Wednesday star.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to face off against Watford at Hillsborough Stadium, as Danny Rohl’s side look to build on their solid showing in the midweek in the EFL Cup against Brentford, which saw the Owls unfortunately bow out on penalties.

Whilst optimism has been relatively high in-and-around S6, recent news of a transfer embargo has somewhat soured that, and it could very easily affect Rohl’s transfer plans this January.

Sheffield Wednesday were always unlikely to have spent massively in the upcoming transfer window, but the recent news could seriously hamper any signings, although it looks more likely that the embargo will only be placed on the Owls temporarily.

As a result, they may take an altered stance on outgoing players, and it will be likely that Rohl will want to keep a hold of players if they can’t be replaced, including one that a Championship manager has revealed that he was interested in last season.

Derby County boss reveals interest in Sheffield Wednesday striker

Last January saw Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl make his first steps in the transfer market in acquiring his own players, and one of which was Ike Ugbo on loan, with him showing a clear desire to bolster his front line.

The Canadian became Rohl’s top option, however since his permanent arrival this summer, he has not been on form.

The only striker at Sheffield Wednesday so far this season that hasn’t arguably disappointed is Michael Smith, and Rohl will be glad that he held on to the attacker in previous windows.

In the summer, Smith was hot-property for League One side Wrexham, and Derby County boss Paul Warne has revealed that the Rams were also interested in him during the 2023/24 season, as, per Dominic Dietrich on X, he said:”In every window he [Smith] has been up for discussion.

“Last January I spoke to the Wednesday manager and he wasn’t someone he wanted to loan out. At the moment, he’s not someone I am looking to bring in.”

Danny Rohl will be glad he hung on to Michael Smith for Sheffield Wednesday

Whilst the deal proposed by Derby County will have been a loan deal, it is clear that it would have made his future in the Steel City much more of a doubt.

Now that it is clear that neither Ugbo, nor Jamal Lowe have been able to live up to the billing in the Championship, Rohl will be glad that he somewhat persevered with Smith at Sheffield Wednesday.

After a recent crucial goal against Portsmouth, there is no doubt that he deserves a run of games leading the line, and the Owls would without a doubt be fending for their lives in the Championship if it wasn’t for what he had provided.
