Sheffield Wednesday are attempting to lock down one of their best young talents to a new contract before it expires in June.
Academy talent is extremely important at the Owls. Over the years plenty of notable names have come through the youth ranks.
In the current first-team, Liam Palmer is perhaps the most notable, while Pierce Charles produced a man-of-the-match display against Brentford after joining Wednesday in 2022.
However, the club are now at risk of losing one of their best upcoming talents, with Sean Fusire into the last year of his contract.
Sheffield Wednesday aims to tie Sean Fusire to a new contract before June expiry date
After joining the Owls at the age of nine in 2014, Fusire has progressed through the academy ranks over the years.
In the 2022/23 campaign, the youngster made his debut in an FA Cup replay against Fleetwood Town.
Now at 19 years of age, Fusire has made six appearances in all competitions. Most recently, Fusire featured against Brentford with many ‘impressed’ by his display.
However, one big issue Wednesday faces is that the midfielder’s contract is set to expire in June.
As a result, journalist Joe Crann has reported that Fusire and the Owls are locked in contract negotiations over a potential new deal, however, nothing has been struck yet.
Sheffield Wednesday cannot let another academy player slip through their fingers
It is clear that Fusire has plenty of talent and could have a big future at Sheffield Wednesday one day.
However, the Owls must make sure that this becomes a reality. Too many times have youngsters left without reaching their potential at the club only to succeed elsewhere.
Fusire has already shown multiple times that he is capable of competing at a high level despite his young age.
Danny Rohl must ensure that Wednesday gets the contract over the line so he can continue to develop the 19-year-old without potential inference from other clubs.
