Danny Rohl issues update on Michael Smith at Sheffield Wednesday amid Wrexham interest

Sheffield Wednesday have only sold one player this summer – despite bringing in 12 additions.

While the Owls did loan out Mallik Wilks to Rotherham United, last week’s sale of Bambo Diaby has been the only bit of cash they have made so far.

Several players have been linked with moves away from Sheffield Wednesday this week though, both permanently and on loan.

Bailey Cadamarteri is set to sign for Lincoln City, while Callum Paterson has also been made available for transfer and may have attracted attention with last night’s brace.

One player whose time at Hillsborough has remained uncertain all year is Michael Smith.

The striker was wanted by Derby County in January but Wednesday chose to keep hold out of him.

Rohl issues update on Smith ahead of Deadline Day

He is now a target for Wrexham, but his cameo appearances this season may well have suggested that Danny Rohl wants him to stay at the club once again.

However, rumours of his exit are refusing to disappear and the Owls head coach has now issued an update on his situation.

Speaking to journalist Rob Staton, Rohl said: “He trained in the morning. Let’s see with Michael, what happens there.

“In the morning, I had a good conversation with him. Michael is such a great character. In January, we made the decision. He played a lot in the second leg, maybe more than he expected.

“Let’s see where we are on Friday and then you can ask me again where we are with the transfers.”

Smith’s exit surely depends on one key thing

Once Cadamarteri leaves, Rohl will surely be very sceptical about selling Smith before Friday’s deadline.

While Jamal Lowe is able to play as a No.9, Smith’s exit would leave just Ike Ugbo and Charlie McNeill as their recognised strikers.

The latter’s underwhelming performance against Grimsby Town yesterday may leave Rohl uncertain about trusting him as Ugbo’s back-up too.

While the German will surely want to allow Smith to leave if he demands it himself, he will surely have to bring in his own new forward first.

Wednesday have already been pushing to sign another striker, nothing has come to fruition yet.

If something happens then Smith should be allowed to leave, but if not then he may have to make the harsh decision to keep him around once again.
