Sheffield Wednesday have completed their eleventh signing of the summer.

The Owls haven’t recruited any further players since they snapped up Ike Ugbo in a £3 million deal from Troyes.

Sheffield Wednesday have been pushing to sign a new midfielder and a striker, and their efforts for the former have now paid off.

The club have wrapped up a loan deal to sign Southampton’s Shea Charles, with the 20-year-old linking up with brother Pierce Charles at Middlewood Road.

Charles managed 32 appearances in the Championship as they were promoted via the play-offs, but only made 15 starts.

The youngster hasn’t been named in either of Southampton’s match-day squads in their opening two fixtures in the Premier League and has now joined Wednesday to pick up regular game-time.

What can Sheffield Wednesday expect from Charles?

Charles is likely to compete with Nathaniel Chalobah for his position in the starting line-up – putting him up against someone with significantly more experience than himself.

Given his lack of regular football in the second division, Sheffield Wednesday News decided to speak to Southampton FC News journalist Fraser Spinney for some insight into the new signing.

Spinney said: “Southampton fans were largely excited when Shea Charles arrived from Manchester City last summer given he was highly-rated at City and could play a number of positons.

“Primarily a defensive midfielder, it has not really worked out for Charles at Southampton so far, mainly due to Flynn Downes being one of the first names on the team sheet.

“However, the youngster possesses obvious potential and is a neat and tidy player who should really thrive in a side where he is handed greater responsibility.

“His defensive nous combined with his composure on the ball through his footballing education at Manchester City mean Charles has all the tools to be a top player and he should quickly become a staple of Rohl’s side.”

Charles sounds like the perfect fit for Danny Rohl’s demands

Charles’ potential was fairly obvious when the Saints decided to spend £15m on him after only making one appearance in the top flight for Man City.

Wednesday need someone with great defensive capabilities to anchor the midfield, while it is clear that Danny Rohl wants his team to be able to play out from the back and be brilliant on the ball.

Both of those aspects seem to fit perfectly into the mould of Charles, as per Spinney’s comments on the player.

The youngster may take some time to settle into the team, but definitely gives a brilliant option to rotate with Chalobah, while the 29-year-old could also be a great mentor for him.

Rohl has proven to work brilliantly with younger players so far and fans should be excited to see what he can get out of Charles.
