Josh Windass had a funny response when asked to present Michael Smith with his Man of the Match award after Sheffield Wednesday’s win at Portsmouth.
Both Sheffield Wednesday strikers were on the score-sheet against Portsmouth on Friday night, as the Owls staged a second half comeback to avoid defeat against the league’s bottom club.
For Danny Rohl’s side, it’s a first win in two, but a second-straight win on the road, with Wednesday now unbeaten in their last three away games despite losing their first four Championship away fixtures of the season.
The Owls now sit in 11th place of the table. Josh Windass has three Championship goals this season, making him the Owls’ top scorer, whilst Michael Smith has two goals and two assists, giving him the most goal contributions of any Wednesday player in the league this season.
Smith won the Man of the Match award for Sheffield Wednesday against Portsmouth, and it was Windass who presented him the award.

Josh Windass says ‘I’ve got enough’ as he hands Michael Smith Man of the Match award
After the game, Windass and Smith spoke to Sky Sports, with Smith giving a hilarious insight to his goal.
He said that he was ‘shattered’ and couldn’t take another touch, instead thumping the ball from 25 yards and finding the top corner.
When asked if he’d mind handing Smith the Man of the Match award, Windass joked: “Yeah don’t worry, I’ve got enough.”
Windass signed a new Sheffield Wednesday contract during the summer. He’s now in his fifth full season at Hillsborough having made 146 total appearances, scoring 43 and assisting 17.
Michael Smith came close to leaving Sheffield Wednesday in the summer
Smith, 33, is out of contract next summer. But he’s certainly putting a case forward for a new deal, despite coming close to leaving S6 during the summer.
Wrexham wanted to sign Smith from Sheffield Wednesday and Rohl was forced to speak out on the matter, insisting that he liked Smith as a player, and even revealing that he could’ve left in the January transfer window.
“Let’s see with Michael, what happens there,” Rohl said during the summer.
“In the morning, I had a good conversation with him. Michael is such a great character. In January, we made the decision.
“He played a lot in the second leg [second half of the 2023/24 season], maybe more than he expected.”
What happens with Smith between now and January, or between now and next summer, remains to be seen.
But if he keeps on performing well then Wednesday will certainly have to make a tough decision to make.
