The five Sheffield Wednesday transfers that could realistically happen in January

The January transfer window is rapidly approaching with just nine games standing between Sheffield Wednesday and 2025.

For Sheffield Wednesday, January looks set to be a very restricted month in terms of potential new signings.

Earlier in November, Sheffield Wednesday were placed under registration embargo but have since been lifted out of it.

Despite that, there’s widespread concern about chairman Dejphon Chansiri and how much capital he has to invest in player signings in the January transfer window.

Danny Rohl is keen for some new Sheffield Wednesdays though, with loan captures looking like a likely strategy for the Owls.

There’ll also, no doubt, be some player departures at Hillsborough….

Callum Paterson bound to leave Sheffield Wednesday in January

Out of favour attacker Callum Paterson could be one who’s moved on in S6, with the Scot having barely played this season.

Paterson, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has featured just four times in the Championship this season, failing to grab a goal or assist.

Speaking in October, Paterson shared his frustrations at a lack of game time under Rohl this season.

Given his contract situation and so on, selling Patterson in January seems like the best outcome for all.

Charlie McNeill loaned out

Summer signing Charlie McNeill is another who’s exiled right now, with the former Manchester United gem having yet to make his Championship debut for the Owls.

McNeill scored twice in the Carabao Cup win over Hull City back in August. It gave fans high hopes for the 21-year-old but he’s failed to impress in his Carabao Cup appearances since.

Having not been been named in a matchday squad in the Championship since mid-October, a loan exit for McNeill could be ideal.

Dion Sanderson loaned in

One potential signing that could be realistic for Sheffield Wednesday is the loan signing of Birmingham City defender Dion Sanderson.

Speaking recently, Carlton Palmer said Sheffield Wednesday would be a good fit for Sanderson who’s played just twice in League One this season.

But Birmingham City will only let Sanderson leave on one condition in January: they sign a replacement centre-back first.

Michael Smith sold

Michael Smith has been an unlikely hero for Sheffield Wednesday this season, with Smith’s wondergoal against Portsmouth and assist that game, which inspired the comeback win, highlighting his importance.

But he’s out of contract at the end of the season. At 33 years old, he may not be in Rohl’s future plans, and with finances tight, the club could be forced to sell someone like Smith who had interest in the summer.

Wrexham wanted to sign Smith during the summer transfer window and there’ll surely be teams who’d consider a cut-price January deal.

Pierce Charles loaned out

Another Sheffield Wednesday gem who could be loaned out in the January window is academy goalkeeper Pierce Charles.

Charles started in goal for Northern Ireland during the November international break, keeping a clean sheet in one game but having a little blip in the second.

Still, he remains someone with huge potential and with James Beadle still the no.1, and Ben Hamer back from injury, it could free up Charles to go out on loan.

He needs some first-team experience ahead of likely becoming the Owls’ no.1 next season.
