Sheffield Wednesday looked as though they’d dropped the ball during the summer transfer window, with regards to one position in particular.
Sheffield Wednesday were efficient during the summer transfer window, in which nine new players arrived at Hillsborough.
Danny Rohl wanted his side to act fast and get the first-team together as soon as possible. And that’s exactly what the Owls did, having brought in eight new players before their pre-season tour of Austria and Germany.
Shea Charles was the ninth and final summer signing in S6. But following the end of the summer transfer window, and then some poor results in the Championship, the Owls’ summer business seemed to miss out on one thing.
Wednesday looked a centre-back light even during the summer, let alone after deadline day had passed, and then Di’Shon Bernard was picking up injuries and suspensions, with Dominic Iorfa currently injured as well.
Recently though, one name has stepped up to the plate, and eased the club’s lack of centre-back options.
Akin Famewo experiencing Sheffield Wednesday resurgence
Akin Famewo has featured in only three of Wednesday’s opening seven league fixtures this season, with all three of those being the last three league outings for the Owls.
Famewo had a minor injury at the start of the campaign. But since, the 25-year-old has been bang in form, putting in three solid defensive displays.
Against West Brom, Famewo topped the Sheffield Wednesday stats for defensive actions (eight), as well as accurate passes (27), providing a pinpoint assist for Josh Windass’ header against West Brom.
Last season, Famewo was quite a divisive player among fans. But during the pre-season, Rohl kept on playing Famewo, and since his return to fitness he’s become a key player.

Since Sheffield Wednesday appointed Rohl last October, so many individual players have become so much better.
Famewo is showing with his performances this season that he’s another who’s really benefitting from Rohl’s magic.
The Englishman is proving to be very reliable defensively, commanding on the ground and in the air, and his passing game has got up to speed with the style of play that Rohl demands.
Although centre-backs are still thin on the ground, Famewo’s recent upturn in form has taken the light away from the issues at centre-back.
Sheffield Wednesday travel to Bristol City in the Championship on Wednesday night.
