West Brom were strongly linked with a Sheffield Wednesday player during the summer transfer window just gone.
West Brom visited Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon, where they might have been anticipating a potential banana skin of a match against Danny Rohl’s side.
On their last visit to S6, Sheffield Wednesday beat West Brom 3-0. And the score was almost 3-0 at half-time on Saturday, with Wednesday scoring twice in the first half.
Marvin Johnson and Josh Windass got on the scoresheet, with Windass’ goal the pick of the bunch, looping a header over the Baggies goalkeeper following a pinpoint longball from Akin Famewo.
West Brom then found themselves level with five minutes to play, with Alex Mowatt getting them back on level terms with a volley.
But in true Wednesday fashion, they kept at it and had a third goal almost instantly after going 2-2, with Anthony Musaba scoring his first of the season.
West Brom wanted to sign Josh Windass during the summer
There were several Sheffield Wednesday players whose contracts expired at the end of last season, and several who re-signed.
Among those were Barry Bannan, Dominic Iorfa, and Di’Shon Bernard, and today’s second goal-scorer Windass.
Windass signed a new Sheffield Wednesday contract despite having plenty of interest from elsewhere in the Championship.
Derby County and Hull City were interested in signing Windass following his strong end to the 2023/24 season, which saw him score three in Wednesday’s final three games of the campaign.
West Brom were also linked with the 30-year-old. On Saturday though, the Baggies were on the receiving end of Windass’ second goal of the season, and what a goal it was. Dom Howson described the goal as ‘fantastic’ on X.
Josh Windass needs to build on positive West Brom showing
Windass has been poor in the last few weeks. But against West Brom, and in the first half especially, he looked like his former self.
He put himself about well and took his goal confidently, showcasing his ability to score all kinds of goals, and his ability to play just behind the striker as well.
Now that he’s got that goal under his belt, along with a positive all round performance, Windass needs to use it as a platform to build upon, and go on a run of form.
Likewise, Sheffield Wednesday need to use their overall performance vs the Baggies to build upon, and start moving up the Championship table after what’s been a sluggish start to the new season.
