Rob Staton hits back at Barry Bannan critics after Sheffield Wednesday defeat vs Millwall

Sheffield Wednesday fans were left hugely disappointed after the last outing vs Millwall.

Sheffield Wednesday have now lost their last three games in the Championship.

Since the opening day win vs Plymouth Argyle, Danny Rohl’s Owls have lost against Sunderland, Leeds United, and Millwall in the Championship.

But the defeat vs Millwall felt like the most disappointing of the lot, given the fact that Millwall were winless this season before Sheffield Wednesday visited The Den.

It was another tired performance at both ends of the pitch, and Sheffield Wednesday fans are rightly letting their concerns be known.

Rohl is coming under scrutiny for his inability to adapt to different opponents and for his apparant lack of a Plan B.

Elsewhere, several first-team players have come under the spotlight, but it seems as though captain Barry Bannan is the one most in the firing line on social media.

Rob Staton responds to Barry Bannan criticism at Sheffield Wednesday

Bannan has been a key talking point this season. Many fans feel like he’s slowly becoming less-suited to Rohl’s style of play and formation, and that he needs to be dropped.

The 34-year-old started alongside Shea Charles, who impressed Sheffield Wednesday fans vs Millwall with Svante Ingelsson dropping down to the bench.

Many fans feel that, with a two-strong central midfield pair, Bannan becomes less impactful in the games, and being the captain, Bannan often seems to take the brunt of fans’ criticism.

Responding to the latest criticisms, BBC pundit Rob Staton said on Football Heaven: “What more does Barry Bannan have to do, that when every time Wednesday have either a bad run, or a bad result, people point the finger at the captain?

“Has he just been too good for Sheffield Wednesday over the years? Has he done too much for the Owls, that people have to automatically go for him?”

Staton added: “What are you doing here, Wednesday fans, if you’re going to point the finger at Bannan? That’s the last of Sheffield Wednesday’s issues.”

Barry Bannan not at fault for Sheffield Wednesday shortcomings this season

Bannan looks to be in the same shape that he was last season; and last season, he was arguably Wednesday’s best player across the campaign.

But something about Rohl’s style of play this season seems to have restricted Bannan’s role in the side, and the amount of time he actually gets on the ball.

It’s clear that something isn’t working and it starts with the tactic, and with Rohl, who knows he has a top Championship player in Bannan, on his day, and so he needs to find a way of getting him back to his best.

It’s been a frustrating start to the season for Wednesday fans who’ll be hoping that this international break gives Rohl time to make the necessary changes on the training ground.
