Sheffield Wednesday wrapped up a loan deal for Southampton’s Shea Charles yesterday.

The midfielder joins his brother Pierce in Yorkshire, with the goalkeeper immediately taking to Instagram to share his delight at the reunion.

Charles arrives at Sheffield Wednesday to compete with Nathaniel Chalobah for his place in the starting line-up, with the latter making his debut in the Carabao Cup last night following a brief injury.

The 20-year-old joined Southampton from Man City in a £15 million deal last summer, but struggled to establish a regular starting spot for the Saints.

Charles is very highly-rated though and Danny Rohl has now shared his excitement at signing ‘such a player’.

Charles’ arrival has made Rohl ‘very happy’

Speaking to journalist Rob Staton, Rohl said: “”I’m very happy to get such a player at Sheffield Wednesday. I think it’s a huge step forward for us as a club that we can battle with different clubs. A lot of clubs wanted hiim and we got him – and I know which clubs wanted him as well. But we got him and this is fantastic. He can carry the ball, he is smart.

“He also has the expectations and he understands the six position because he played as a centre-back in the past. This is also helpful. I’m thinking more of a strong holding six instead of an eight. He got promoted, he won the Champions League. I think he has a lot of experience in his young age. But of course, he’s a young player and you have to give him the development time. This is my job.”

Sheffield Wednesday are about to discover his true potential

Charles made his Man City debut in May 2023 and was also named on the bench in the Champions League two months earlier.

The youngster has experience training with the best manager in the world in Pep Guardiola, with the Spaniard previously hailing him as ‘so good’ and ‘so composed’.

The youngster has also previously been linked with Celtic and Borussia Dortmund.

It is quite clear from his playing career so far that Charles has bags of potential, and while he has only joined Wednesday on loan, Rohl will be looking to get as much out of him as possible in just one season.

There was always question marks over whether Chalobah was at the level needed to be the Owls’ starting midfielder and Charles could well have been brought into take his spot.

It’s undoubtedly a very exciting signing, and Rohl being excited by it should definitely send fans a very promising message.
