Rob Staton fires January transfer warning to Sheffield Wednesday, makes ‘convinced’ claim about Danny Rohl

BBC pundit Rob Staton has been discussing Sheffield Wednesday’s recent embargo, the upcoming January transfer window, and Danny Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday were placed under a registration embargo at the end of October, giving the Owls faithful plenty to worry about with the January transfer window just around the corner.

Inevitably, it led to a new wave of criticism aimed at controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri. But earlier in November, Sheffield Wednesday were lifted out of embargo.

Still, fans harbour very few hopes of a positive January transfer window at Hillsborough. And it’s made more alarming by the fact that the Owls seem to be in desperate need of some added quality in the New Year.

After a 1-0 defeat against Sheffield United in the Steel City derby last time out, the Owls now sit in 15th place of the Championship table, and just three points above the relegation zone.

Rob Staton gives verdict on Sheffield Wednesday embargo and makes Danny Rohl claim

Speaking on Football Heaven, Rob Staton discussed Sheffield Wednesday’s last January’s transfer window, which proved successful.

The Owls focused on the loan market signing James Beadle, Ike Ugbo, and Ian Poveda who all proved successful signings.

But Staton wants to see more forward-planning with regards to recruitment at Hillsborough, and not simply relying on loans and the odd signing.

He said: “Can you rely on that? Loans, a signing here or there towards the back end, to get you over and just add to the numbers.

“Or does it need to be planned, structured, go and get some quality to take the next step.

“How likely is that to happen when when the club is having a two-week stint in an embargo in November? Is the money there to be able to do that?

“Because if this manager gets backed, I am convinced that Danny Rohl can take Sheffield Wednesday to where they want to go.

“But he’s going to need that support. He’s going to have to add some quality.”

Sheffield Wednesday braced for another lacklustre January transfer window

The summer transfer window was a positive one. It showed more signs of planned and structured recruitment with some exciting permanent signings. But January looks set to be bleak.

Before the Owls were placed under embargo, Sheffield Wednesday News sources revealed that the club would be very restricted in what they’d be able to do in January, with loans once again the focus.

And the ongoing off-field uncertainty only paints a more uncertain picture where Rohl’s future in S6 is concerned.

Like Staton says, Rohl has proved that with the right backing he could probably get Sheffield Wednesday challenging for promotion. But he’s not going to get that on a consistent basis with Chansiri at the helm, as successive embargos and inconsistent spending patterns proves.

The Owls return to action at home against Cardiff City later in November.
