‘I trust him’… Danny Rohl defends Sheffield Wednesday man who ranked last for two key stats vs Blades

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl painted a frustrated, and upset picture when he was talking to the press after the Steel City derby defeat.

Sheffield United won the first Steel City derby in five years by the odd goal, coming from Tyrese Campbell in the 50th minute of the game at Bramall Lane.

Wednesday now find themselves in 15th place of the Championship table going into the November international break, having had a mixed run of results since the October break.

There’s been six games in the last month. Sheffield Wednesday have won two, draw one, and lost three and face Cardiff City in their next outing at Hillsborough later in November.

For Rohl, there were once again positives and negatives to take from the game against Sheffield United, though being such a huge derby, defeat means that the overall mood is negative.

And once again, there’s criticism for Ike Ugbo on social media.

Danny Rohl defends Ike Ugbo form at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday signed Ugbo for £2.5million in the summer. But he’s endured a rotten run in front of goal so far, with no goals in 14 Championship games this season.

That’s compared to the second half of last season where Canadian striker Ugbo scored seven in 18 Championship outings as the Owls beat the drop.

There’s been a lot of talk about the 26-year-old on social media in recent weeks. Sheffield Wednesday fans have been critical of Ugbo, but Rohl has always defended the player, despite dropping him in certain games.

Ugbo started against Sheffield United, though. He put himself about but couldn’t create anything in the game.

Speaking about Ugbo’s form after the game, Rohl told the press: “I’m not worried about his form. His moment will come. I trust him and I believe in him.”

Against United, Ugbo ranked last among the Wednesday starters for touches of the ball (16), as well as accurate passes (six).

Sheffield Wednesday fans have one thought on Ike Ugbo right now

Ugbo set the bar very high with his goals last season. Then arriving at Hillsborough for a sizeable fee in the summer, there was pressure to deliver.

Now with every passing game where Ugbo doesn’t score, that pressure grows. But commenting after the 2-0 win over Norwich City in midweek, Owls fans shared an interesting theory about Ugbo.

Sheffield Wednesday fans think Ugbo just needs one goal to get his confidence back, and get his mojo back.

And Rohl’s continued defence of the striker is just what Ugbo needs. It seems like a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ with Ugbo, who everyone knows is a very clinical striker when he’s at his best.
