Sheffield Wednesday fans have been fearing the worst ahead of January, with the club having been placed under an embargo.
At the end of October, it was revealed that Sheffield Wednesday were placed under an embargo due to money owed to HMRC.
The news sparked a riot among Owls fans on social media who were once again calling for chairman Dejphon Chansiri to sell up.
Just last season, Wednesday were under embargo for the same reason. But Chansiri earned praise from Sheffield Wednesday fans during the summer as the club signed 11 new players, with £2.5million spent on Ike Ugbo alone.
On Wednesday, Alex Miller said that Sheffield Wednesday remained confident of lifting the embargo well before the January transfer window, which is in just six weeks now.
Then on Tuesday, Joe Crann revealed that the Owls were expecting the embargo to be lifted imminently, after settling the outstanding debt.

Sheffield Wednesday pay outstanding HMRC debt, embargo lifting ‘imminent’
Journalist Crann posted on X to reveal that Sheffield Wednesday and Chansiri ‘have now paid the money to HMRC that was outstanding’.
It means that the Owls’ EFL embargo will be lifted imminently. Crann’s post read: “Understand that #SWFC have now paid the money to HMRC that was outstanding, with their name set to be removed from the EFL’s list of embargoed clubs now imminent.”
Rohl has big plans for the January transfer window at Sheffield Wednesday, and indeed for the summer transfer window in 2025, so this latest news will surely come as a relief to the German.
But it’s a stark reminder that Wednesday remains a club with huge off-field uncertainty.
Sheffield Wednesday fans too quick to criticise Dejphon Chansiri, says pundit
Soon after the news of Wednesday’s embargo was released, pundit and former Owl Carlton Palmer surprisingly jumped to the defence of Chansiri.
Palmer said about Sheffield Wednesday’s embargo situation: “I think the chairman has done fantastic this summer for the football club, he did fantastic last season when he put his hand in his pocket to get Danny Rohl and bring in the players he has.
“He has spent an awful lot of money. It’s not a good look for Sheffield Wednesday, but I think the chairman needs to be cut some slack given what he’s done.”
Now that the embargo is to be lifted imminently, a lot of frustration aimed at Chansiri will be lifted as well.
But again, Sheffield Wednesday are never too far away from this kind of uncertainty, and that’ll stop them from attracting the best players going forward. And long-term, Rohl may already be thinking about where his future lies.
January, and what business the Owls do, will tell us a lot more about the financial state of the club.
