What Sheffield Wednesday’s XI could look like next season with nine set to leave in 2025 – it’s very worrying

Danny Rohl remains ambitious as ever, and he’s already got an eye on what business he’ll be doing next summer.

Speaking earlier this season, Danny Rohl revealed he has plans for the next two transfer windows at Sheffield Wednesday.

The upcoming January window will be about about loan signings whilst next summer could be another rebuilding job, albeit much smaller than previous summer rebuilds.

As things stand, Sheffield Wednesday have seven players out of contract in 2025, and two loan players in James Beadle and Shea Charles returning to parent clubs making for a total of nine player exits next summer.

Who’s out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday in 2025?

It’s somewhat unclear who exactly is out of contract next summer with Sheffield Wednesday often not revealing the lengths of players’ contracts.

But it’s widely thought that Barry Bannan signed a one-year extension at Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, with Liam Palmer doing the same.

Elsewhere, we know that Michael Smith, Callum Paterson, Pol Valentin, and Akin Famewo are out of contract, but Sheffield Wednesday want new contracts for Valentin and Famewo.

Marvin Johnson is also speculated to be out of contract next summer. That might even be safe to assume with Johnson recently discussing his Sheffield Wednesday future as though he is out of contract in half-a-season.

Many believe Pierce Charles is out of contract next summer too, with Transfermarkt claiming so. But there’s no reports confirming so, and with Charles having signed an ‘extended deal’ earlier this year, it seems fair to assume that he is under contract for next season.

How Sheffield Wednesday’s starting XI could look next season

There’s going to be some key gaps to fill in the side next summer, providing none of those out of contract re-sign with the club.

Bannan wants to stay at Sheffield Wednesday and will surely be handed a new deal in good time, but for now his future is unclear. Shea Charles next to him will definitely need replacing, especially with Palmer’s future up in the air.

Johnson and Valentin leaving would take out both of Rohl’s current starting wing-backs, and behind the defence, Charles would no doubt start in goal when Beadle leaves.

Rohl may plan to expose some of his youngsters to Championship football in the second half of this season, in a bid to get them ready for more regular first-team football next time round: names like Gabriel Otegbayo and Sean Fusire for example.

But looking at what the Owls’ XI might look like next season is quite worrying, with a lack of balance and a lack of depth in certain positions; on the flanks especially.
