Sheffield Wednesday have a lot to prove in their Championship clash vs QPR on Saturday.

Despite this being just the fifth game of the 2024/25 season, there’s sense that this upcoming clash vs QPR at Hillsborough is a very important one for Sheffield Wednesday.

Danny Rohl’s side promised so much after the opening day win vs Plymouth Argyle, but have been hugely disappointing since.

The Owls have lost their last three and haven’t scored a single goal either, conceding nine in the process.

QPR will be another tough test. But a win for Wednesday would ease a lot of fears for this new season.

Here we look at three things that Sheffield Wednesday fans may want to see when the team news comes out at 2pm…

A change in the Sheffield Wednesday engine room

Recently, Barry Bannan has come under criticism for some of his performances, with many fans thinking that the long-time Owls skipper doesn’t fit the current system.

Perhaps too much of Sheffield Wednesday’s play goes through Bannan and in the 3-0 defeat vs Millwall especially, Wednesday looked too one dimensional.

Rohl now has Shea Charles to try and fit into the midfield, whilst Svante Ingelsson was left on the bench vs Millwall whilst he’s arguably Wednesday’s best attacking threat in the middle of the park.

Something needs to change in the middle, but how Rohl manages it remains a mystery.

Solidity in the Sheffield Wednesday defence

Rohl’s biggest dilemma going into this weekend is his defence, specifically his centre-backs.

Ahead of the weekend, Rohl revealed an injury crisis in his side with all of Dominic Iorfa, Di’Shon Bernard, Michael Ihiekwe potentially set to miss the QPR game.

But that could be the perfect chance to reinstate Liam Palmer; the Wednesday favourite brings experience and leadership to the side and that could be a huge factor in ending this current poor form.

Given the potential volume of injuries in defence though, Palmer alone may not be able to stem the tide for Sheffield Wednesday.

Fresh legs in the Sheffield Wednesday attack

Sheffield Wednesday’s USP under Rohl is their high press. But so far this season, we’ve barely seen the attacking output.

That might be largely down to Wednesday not being able to get the ball forward as effectively as they did at times last season.

But still, Wednesday could do with an injection of life in attack, which could be brought on by giving some lesser-see faces a chance to show their class.

Names like Olaf Kobacki have been waiting patiently for their first league start since moving to Hillsborough in the summer, whilst the likes of Charlie McNeill coming off the bench could give Wednesday a lease of life.
