Sheffield Wednesday’s January transfer window needs to be a big one if the Owls are to achieve a top half finish in the Championship this season.
But unfortunately for the Owls, everything leading up to the January transfer window has so far been negative.
We reported earlier in the month that Sheffield Wednesday will be restricted in January, just before the Owls were placed under registration embargo.
Since, Sheffield Wednesday’s embargo has been lifted. But there remains very few hopes for the club in January with owner Dejphon Chansiri having painted a very uncertain picture behind the scenes.
Rather interestingly, though, the MLS regular season has ended and clubs are starting to announce their retained lists ahead of the 2025 season.

Sheffield Wednesday recruitment chief has one eye on the MLS
Last season before the January transfer window opened, Sheffield Wednesday appointed Kevin Beadell as head of recruitment.
The former Arsenal and Manchester United recruitment figure has had a definite impact on the Owls’ recruitment with Wednesday now branching out to Europe.
Upon his arrival at Hillsborough last year, Beadell also outlined plans to scour the MLS for potential new signings at Sheffield Wednesday.
He said: “We’re open, and so is the manager, in looking at all markets. Players that are experienced in England and the Championship, which we know is a very tough league but also, equally, we will look at markets in Europe, the MLS and other emerging areas.”
What has Danny Rohl said about Sheffield Wednesday’s January transfer plans?
Danny Rohl remains as ambitious as ever, but whether his big plans for the club can come to fruition remains to be seen.
Speaking earlier in the campaign, Rohl said he has a ‘clear idea’ for January and even for the summer transfer window in 2025.
But Rohl has also stated that Sheffield Wednesday could focus on loan signings in January, suggesting that he knows there isn’t much money to play with in the New Year.
Rohl said in October: “I’ll have a good conversation with our chairman, with Kevin [Beadell]. It goes in the right direction and January you know… what is possible, what is not possible in January, but we will try.
“We will look what’s on the market. Last year we did well with good loans. It could be maybe, a way in January to get an immediate impact.”
With finances tight and the MLS a market of interest, free agent signings from the States could be a very shrewd way for Sheffield Wednesday to bolster in the New Year.
There’s often gems to be found in the MLS but Wednesday would need to act fast to bring them in. Typically, MLS contracts expire on December 31st.
