Sheffield Wednesday ace is too good for the Championship, recent announcement proves it

Sheffield Wednesday don’t have too many star players. But they certainly have one in their first-team squad right now.

Sheffield Wednesday fans remain largely positive despite the Steel City derby defeat against Sheffield United last time out.

It was a narrow 1-0 defeat at Bramall Lane, in a game that Danny Rohl’s side could easily have taken a point from.

It leaves the Owls in 15th place of the Championship table. The club’s fortunes are much brighter this time round than last and the fans have a positive summer transfer window to thank for that.

Sheffield Wednesday signed 11 new players, massively improving and bolstering the first-team squad.

And many will argue that the pick of the bunch so far has been Southampton loan man Shea Charles, who was the last to arrive at Hillsborough during the summer transfer window.

Shea Charles set to captain Northern Ireland in Nations League

Rohl spoke positively of Charles after he arrived at Sheffield Wednesday. It got fans excited and they saw his class immediately.

Despite debuting in a 3-0 defeat at Millwall earlier in the season, Charles impressed the Sheffield Wednesday fans who said he was the only positive that day.

He’s carried on his fine form. The 21-year-old has started every league game since and looks undroppable from the Sheffield Wednesday XI.

Charles and younger brother Pierce have both been playing for the Northern Ireland senior team this season.

But Shea is now set to captain his nation for the first time when they take on Belarus in a Nations League clash on Friday night.

Shea Charles is levels above Sheffield Wednesday who fear January recall

Rohl is fearful of Charles being recalled in the January transfer window. But there’s no signs of that being the case just yet, despite Southampton’s struggles in the Premier League.

Speaking earlier this season, Saints boss Russell Martin discussed Charles at Sheffield Wednesday and made no suggestions that he wanted to recall him.

But with Charles shining on both the club and international stage, the next logical step would be the Premier League.

That, or Southampton might fancy recalling Charles in January and sending him to a team higher up the Championship table, especially if the Owls’ form continues to be mixed.

It’s a tactic often deployed by teams who send players on loan to the Championship and there’d no doubt be a list if suitors who’d take Charles for the second half of this season.
