Sheffield Wednesday could still see a few players coming and going in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.
The summer transfer window slams shuts on August 30th, and it’ll bring an end to what’s been a very positive summer transfer window.
Even if Sheffield Wednesday don’t sign anymore players, the Owls have still enjoyed a strong window with nine new names having arrived under Danny Rohl.
But it looks highly likely that some more new faces will arrive at Hillsborough in the coming weeks, as well as some familiar faces.
Sheffield Wednesday want to re-sign Ike Ugbo from Troyes, and there’s also Las Palmas striker Sory Kaba on Sheffield Wednesday’s radar this summer.
Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri may also want to oversee some player exits in the coming weeks too, either on loan or on permanent deals, following yet another influx of players, with money spent on the likes of Yan Valery and Olaf Kobacki.
For Rohl though, one particular player exit may cause him a headache. But said player needs to push for the exit.
Pierce Charles must push for Sheffield Wednesday loan exit this summer
Young goalkeeper Pierce Charles has enjoyed a strong 12 months; making his first-team debut for the Owls and then playing in the U19s Euros with Northern Ireland.
Sheffield Wednesday players think very highly of Charles who debuted in the FA Cup against Coventry City last season.
There’s a lot of speculation that he’ll head out on loan this summer and recent reports revealed that Crawley have enquired about signing Charles on loan for the 2024/25 season.
But Rohl is currently wary of sending Charles out on loan. It comes after the injury to Ben Hamer which technically makes Charles the no.2 goalkeeper.
Why Pierce Charles can’t settle for a no.2 role at Sheffield Wednesday
Being no.2 for a Championship team is certainly a big achievement for such a young goalkeeper.
But it won’t exactly give Charles any experience. At his age and with his potential, he needs to be a no.1 somewhere else in the Football League, ideally in League One or Two.
The fact that Charles may not go out on loan because of an injury to Hamer could be very frustrating to the young shot-stopper and Rohl needs to think carefully about the situation.
If it means bringing in another goalkeeper on a free transfer to play no.2, and then no.2 or no.3 when Hamer is fit, then so be it.
Sheffield Wednesday need to put as much focus and emphasis on their youngsters as possible.
If Charles can go out on loan then come next summer, he’ll be a much more rounded goalkeeper, and it could set him on his way to becoming a very valuable asset for the Owls.
