Danny Rohl has named the one positive he took from Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat to Coventry City
Sheffield Wednesday had headed in 2024 in pretty high spirits, having won four of their seven games in December.
The Owls went onto win their first three games of the year, but have since gone dramatically downhill.
Last night’s defeat to Coventry was the third time in only six games where they have conceded four goals and they have now failed to win a game in a month.
Sheffield Wednesday headed into the FA Cup replay with a rather weakened team, starting the likes of Reece James, Gui Siqueira and Ashley Fletcher, in favour of starting the stronger players in the Championship this weekend.
Kasey Palmer handed them an early sucker punch after only three minutes, but the visitors were gifted a lifeline when Bailey Cadamarteri equalised shortly after.
The second half saw Danny Rohl’s completely crumble and Coventry netted a further three goals in only eight minutes.
It was the third defeat to the Sky Blues this season and doesn’t leave the side full of confidence going into their next match, however Rohl did take one positive from the game.
Speaking after the game, the coach said: “I saw a first half where we invested a lot and played well, but then in eight we conceded three goals and that’s hard to take. This is what we have to learn – we spoke about the exact situation after Huddersfield… Our reaction in the first half was great, but you saw also the difference in the final third today – which is where we are.
“We did, however, have five academy players on the pitch tonight – and this, for me, is a good signal.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s youngsters that are stepping up
Gui Siqueira, Sam Reed and Joey Phuthi were handed big opportunities to make their mark in the Midland yesterday, while Pierce Charles was awarded his place in between the sticks with Cameron Dawson still sidelined.
Bailey Cadamarteri took his chance well after a spell out of the starting line-up, and his young teammates will be eager to follow in his footsteps and use that game as a platform to step up.
It will be an incredibly disappointing result for them all, but they can certainly learn from it and hopefully will be given more minutes with the senior team going forward.
