Sheffield Wednesday have been heavily criticised for last night’s performance against Coventry City.
It’s been a while since Sheffield Wednesday have had much to cheer about, having now lost four and drawn two of their last six games in all competitions. They have also conceded four goals in three of those matches and have only managed three themselves.
The Owls made it clear that they preferred to focus on the Championship with their weakened team selection, however it did not excuse a very disappointing display.
While there were very few positives to take from their trip to the Midlands, one player who has been particularly ridiculed is Momo Diaby.
The midfielder has had a difficult start to life in England, having spent the first four months of the campaign on the sidelines.
There was plenty of excitement for Diaby to return to full fitness in the new year, but he has so far been rather underwhelming.
He is yet to start a game in the Championship since returning, though he was handed his third successive start in the FA Cup – but Danny Rohl‘s trust didn’t pay off.
After being held somewhat responsible for two of Coventry’s goals, Diaby was given a four rating by The Star journalist Alex Miller.
He wrote: “Sluggish in getting the ball out of his feet and was far too easily dispossessed for the goal and then got turned inside out by a bit of class from O’Hare for the third. Looked off the pace from early doors and was unable to recover.”

He wasn’t the only player to be criticised though, with Liam Palmer also disappointing, while Mallik Wilks was slammed for being ‘over-run’ and ‘weak’.
Bailey Cadamarteri did come through with some praise though, with Joe Crann hailing his ‘very good, instinctive finish’ inside ten minutes. Will Vaulks also received plaudits, having ‘showed leadership’ despite defeat.
There certainly won’t be many of the fringe players who were handed a start that will have earned themselves a place in the weekend’s team, though Bailey Cadamarteri could be one of them.
Vaulks was an unused substitute during the 4-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town last time out, so perhaps he could be given another chance in midfield after failing to make an appearance in the Owls’ last three games.
