How Sheffield Wednesday youngster Pierce Charles fared for Northern Ireland U21 against England

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles faced a stern test against England U21’s.

The international break for Sheffield Wednesday came at the most perfect moment for the Owls, with Danny Rohl’s side suffering three consecutive defeats in the Championship, all of which his team were unable to find the back of the net.

The Owls have struggled in every sense, and their attacking capabilities appear to have vanished in recent weeks, and it will be a real stern test for Rohl to turn around the tide of the season at this very early stage.

In lighter news, Sheffield Wednesday fans will be impressed with their several players going out on international duty, with Sheffield Wednesday goalkeepers James Beadle and Pierce Charles getting called up to their respective U21 side.

Beadle was unexpectedly called up to train with the senior England side during the week, however returned to the U21 team for their game against Northern Ireland, with the Owls shot-stopper sitting on the bench.

However, for Northern Ireland young Owls keeper Charles played the full 90 minutes, and the youngster put in quite the performance.

Sheffield Wednesday youngster Pierce Charles shines for Northern Ireland U21’s

Young shot-stopper Charles has been handed various first-team opportunities for Sheffield Wednesday, particularly in the EFL Cup and FA Cup over the past two seasons.

Now, the goalkeeper has shone at youth international level after he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against and England U21 side that saw many talents including the likes of Jonathan Rowe, Elliot Anderson, Archie Gray and Liam Delap feature.

Per SofaScore, managed to keep England out with six saves, as well as having a necessary 100% success rate when it came to ground duels.

When will Pierce Charles be first-team ready

The youngster didn’t quite shine when it came to playing it out from the back, with him getting just a 36% passing accuracy, but with a 8.1 game rating, on par with England and Manchester City man James McAtee, he managed to perform brilliantly and showed real signs of a goalkeeper maturing at a young age.

This was his achilles heel at times in the game against Hull City in the EFL Cup, with him showing potential signs of not being fully confident with the ball at his feet, however that is certainly something that will come with age.

Charles has shown very positive signs at his age, and whilst there isn’t much of a likelihood of him getting ahead of Beadle in the pecking order, he will most certainly be an option from next season onwards to be the Owls’ main man in-between the sticks.
