Five Sheffield Wednesday players who must force an exit before transfer window shuts this week

Sheffield Wednesday are just over 72 hours away from the end of the transfer window.

The Owls are expected to be busy in the final days as they look to add to their ten new signings, while some players are likely to leave Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday haven’t welcomed any further additions since Ike Ugbo made his dramatic return, but they are believed to be pushing to sign a new midfielder and striker.

The Yorkshire outfit look set to seal a loan deal for Southampton’s Shea Charles, while they are to miss out on Brighton striker Mark O’Mahony to Portsmouth.

Wednesday could well have brought in 12 or 13 players by the time the window shuts, and it has become very clear that they will have to part ways with more players to balance out the books.

The Owls made their first sale last week, with Bambo Diaby joining Spanish outfit Elche.

Further exits are expected, while some players are likely to push for a move away in order to pick up more minutes.

Here are five players who should force through a departure before Deadline Day.

Five Sheffield Wednesday stars who should push for exit

Callum Paterson

Paterson’s versatility has come in very handy for Wednesday, but an injury last season has forced him down the pecking order and he is yet to be named in the match-day squad in the Championship this term.

It has already been confirmed that the Owls will let Paterson leave before the deadline, but there has so far been little publicised interest in his signature.

As the utility-man approaches his 30th birthday, he certainly doesn’t want to get stuck at Middlewood Road with such little game-time.

Paterson’s agent may have to start offering him around if he is to earn himself a move over the next couple of days, with a move to League One surely the most likely next step.

Michael Smith

Smith has been heavily linked with the exit door all year, with Wrexham one club that are interested in signing him this summer.

However, he has so far remained in Yorkshire and has made cameo appearances in each of the three league fixtures so far.

Wednesday are expected to bring in a new striker though and Smith could be once again fall out of favour.

The 32-year-old should take his opportunity to leave now, but is likely to be kept at Hillsborough until they find a replacement.

Bailey Cadamarteri

Another striker who could be on his way out is Cadamarteri, who has been linked with a move to Lincoln City.

Even if Smith was to leave too, Wednesday have Ugbo, Jamal Lowe and Charlie McNeill on the books.

The latter is likely to have taken Cadamarteri’s place in the squad and he is certainly too good to be demoted back to the U21s side.

The 19-year-old is a huge prospect in Sheffield, and if he can impress in the third division then he could well establish himself as a regular for the Owls next season.

Sam Reed

Reed has been training with the first-team over the summer after making his senior debut in the FA Cup back in February.

The defender hasn’t made it into the senior squad since the season has started though, with both Max Lowe and Marvin Johnson ahead of him in the pecking order.

Reed is set to turn 22 years old this season though and it feels like he is closing in on his final chance to make it at Wednesday.

The youngster should be given the opportunity to go out on loan, and if he can impress then perhaps he could take Johnson’s spot as the back-up option next summer.

Joey Phuthi

Phuthi made his one and only appearance for the senior team last season, but has since failed to force his way into the first-team set-up.

The ‘exciting’ defender has really made his mark on the U21s and may have a big future at Wednesday, but Yan Valery’s arrival in the summer makes it extremely unlikely that he will be making it anytime soon.

Phuthi is still only 19 years old and has proven to have plenty of potential and could be one of a number of youth players who could make huge strides with some senior minutes under his belt.

If Pol Valentin was to leave next summer due to his own lack of game-time, then Phuthi could potentially replace him.
