Sheffield Wednesday had a mixed January transfer window in the end, missing out on several targets.
On the whole, Sheffield Wednesday endured a January transfer window with mixed results.
The Owls made four signings in the end, and the likes of Ian Poveda, James Beadle, and Ike Ugbo have all become key names in the XI since arriving.
Danny Rohl though would no doubt have liked more. And it seemed like his side were making efforts to bring names in, but on more than one occasion, a player opted for a move elsewhere.
It happened with Conor Coventry who joined Charlton Athletic, and Duncan McGuire on deadline day.
Another name was Darko Gyabi; Sheffield Wednesday were keen on the Leeds United midfielder before he joined Plymouth Argyle on loan.
Darko Gyabi a ‘revelation’ at Plymouth Argyle
Gyabi, 20, is a towering midfielder who stands at 6ft 5in and rose through the ranks at Manchester City.
He joined Leeds United in 2022 but after just two league appearances across his first season-and-a-half at the club, he was loaned out to Plymouth.
And it’s not been an easy ride at Plymouth so far; he’s been in and out of the team, but on Saturday he started in a no.10 role alongside the 17-goal Morgan Whittaker, grabbing an assist and earning a 9/10 rating from Plymouth Live.
Journalist Chris Errington wrote of the 20-year-old:
“The loan signing from Leeds United was a revelation in his new ‘number 10’ role playing alongside Morgan Whittaker and behind Ryan Hardie after his previous games for Argyle had been in a deeper central midfield role. Gyabi had the freedom against Middlesbrough to show his running power, technical ability on the ball and got into some good scoring positions too.”
As per Sofascore, Gyabi had just 31 touches and made 11/12 passes, but 4 of those passes were key passes.
Gyabi, Poveda, Ugbo link-up would’ve made for a dangerous Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday have a new goal hero in Ugbo who scored twice against Bristol City, and who’s now scored five in his last four.
Poveda is also impressing, being labeled as ‘excellent’ in the last outing vs Bristol City, though whether or not the Owls have enough firepower to stay up remains to be seen.
With a player like Gyabi in the side though; bolstering the midfield ranks, adding some quality in the final third and also adding some much-needed height to the XI, it would’ve been a huge boost for Rohl.
Again, question marks will be raised about the January transfer window at Sheffield Wednesday and how they missed out on several targets, though it may be a case of the club being low down in the table and not able to attract their top targets.
But on a positive note, Sheffield Wednesday were clearly looking in the right place with Gyabi who has shown his class with Plymouth, and should Leeds United earn promotion this season then Gyabi could well become available for another loan in the summer months.
