Sheffield Wednesday missed out on signing this Leeds United man, it has been revealed.
Sheffield Wednesday have made a bright start to the January transfer window, bringing in James Beadle and Ike Ugbo on loan from Brighton and Troyes respectively.
More look set to follow in what promises to be a busy month for the Owls, who remain in 22nd place of the Championship table.
Central midfield looks like a definite priority area for Danny Rohl with John Buckley and Tyreeq Bakinson having already left this month, and with Jeff Hendrick also tipped to return to Newcastle United.
One target was Conor Coventry but he’s since signed for Charlton Athletic on a three-and-a-half year deal, and Wednesday have missed out on another midfield target.
Sheffield Wednesday wanted Leeds United man Darko Gyabi
Gyabi recently left Leeds United to join Plymouth Argyle on loan.
The 6ft 6ins central midfielder signed for Leeds from Manchester City for £5million in 2022 but the 19-year-old managed just one Championship appearance under Daniel Farke this season.
His loan move to Plymouth was confirmed yesterday, but since, Football Insider have claimed that Gyabi was also wanted by Rangers, QPR, and Sheffield Wednesday.
Previous reports revealed that the Owls made a loan bid for Gyabi in January last year.
Football Insider now say that Rangers, QPR, and Wednesday all made contact with Leeds over a possible deal for Gyabi, but that a move to Plymouth was too far advanced.
Gyabi blow, but Wednesday clearly want a new midfielder
Gyabi looks like an exciting prospect given his City upbringing and the amount that Leeds spent on signing him last year.
Given the quality and depth in Leeds’ midfield, game-time has been hard to come by and a loan exit always looked likely this month.
And Gyabi is someone who’s been on Wednesday’s radar since before Rohl, so missing out in him will no doubt be a blow for the Owls.
But it’s also clear that Sheffield Wednesday want a new central midfielder given the Coventry and Gyabi links, so fans can expect to see a new midfielder arrive before February 1st.
It makes sense given recent player exits at Hillsborough and this Gyabi link tells us that the Owls are ready to scour the top-end of the Championship for potential new signings.
There’ll be more options out there and it’ll certainly be interesting to see who Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday target in the coming days and weeks.
