Sheffield Wednesday have now seen two players leave the club since the opening of the January transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday recently saw Blackburn Rovers recall John Buckley after a fairly uninspiring loan spell in which he featured just 13 times in the Championship, then having to undergo surgery on a shoulder injury.
And since, the Owls have loaned midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson to League One outfit Charlton Athletic for the remainder of the season.
Like Buckley, Bakinson was very much on the peripheries having played just eight times in the Championship so far this season, with his exit opening up another space in what was a very congested midfield department.
Bakinson joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer ahead of last season and featured 26 times in Wednesday’s promotion-winning campaign, scoring one and assisting one.
He’s out of contract at the end of this season.
Dom Howson says it’s a ‘shame’ it hasn’t worked out for Tyreeq Bakinson
Journalist Dom Howson has given his verdict on Bakinson’s move to Charlton Athletic, posting on X:
The Southampton game that Howson is referring to was in November 2022. Wednesday headed to St Mary’s in the Round of 16 of the Carabao Cup and Bakinson started the game in midfield, with the Owls eventually losing on penalties against what was Premier League opposition at the time.
A crucial opportunity now for Bakinson after Sheffield Wednesday loan exit
Bakinson is just 25 years old and so he has a few years yet before he enters into the prime years of his career.
And with his Sheffield Wednesday contract out at the end of this season, this really feels like a crucial loan move for the midfielder.
But dropping down to League One will surely give him more game time and if he cam make an impact at a Charlton side who’ve lost their last three, and not won in their last six in League One, he could become an instant hit.

That could tempt Danny Rohl and co to extend his Hillsborough deal, but should Bakinson fail to impress then he’ll surely become a free agent next summer and then he’ll certainly be at a crossroads in his career.
But like Howson says, Bakinson is certainly a player with ability and it could jus take a run of games to get him back up to speed.
His Charlton side face Port Vale in League One this afternoon, whilst Sheffield Wednesday take on Cardiff City in the FA Cup.
