Sheffield Wednesday are into the next round of the Carabao Cup.
Sheffield Wednesday have now won their opening two games of the 2024/25 season.
The Owls beat Hull City in the Carabao Cup following their opening day thrashing of Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle.
It was another commanding display from Danny Rohl’s side; Sean Fusire impressed Sheffield Wednesday fans, whilst Charlie McNeill scored twice on his full debut for the club.
Rohl named a completely changed XI for the game at Hull City, resting every single one of the players that played against Plymouth, albeit with Barry Bannan coming off the bench, along with Sheffield Wednesday signing Ike Ugbo.
There were full debuts for the likes of McNeill and Olaf Kobacki against Hull City.
Yet what was a completely new XI would go on to dominate the first half of the game vs Hull City, then proving resolute in the second half to eventually claim the win.
And the Hull City game, albeit not spectacular, has highlighted the sheer brilliance of Rohl.
Danny Rohl has Sheffield Wednesday players well-drilled
Sheffield Wednesday’s style of play is clear; press high, work down the flanks and then cut inside to create goal-scoring chances.
We saw that against Plymouth and we saw that again against Hull City, despite the vast changes to the XI.
It suggests that Rohl has all of his first-team squad pulling in the same direction, all of them understanding of the style and all of them content playing with in any kind of XI.
It certainly bodes well for Sheffield Wednesday going into the new season, as Rohl will be able to rotate his XI and yet still have the same style of play intact.
Danny Rohl may have one Sheffield Wednesday worry right now
There’s definitely a lot to like about Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday right now.
As they are right now, they look like dark horses in the race for top six this season, with that win over Hull City highlighting the organisation in depth that the club has.
But playing such an intense and fast-paced style, Rohl may be weary of his players tiring towards the mid-section of the season.
The January transfer window then could be crucial for the Owls. But for Rohl, signing one or two more players this summer, ideally in the engine room, could ensure that his side don’t get overly-tired as the season goes on.
