Sheffield Wednesday wrapped up their Carabao Cup victory inside 10 minutes this evening.

The Owls were looking to build on their perfect 4-0 win over Plymouth Argyle at the weekend, opting to make eleven changes for their trip to the MKM Stadium.

Hull City stuck with a number of their first-team regulars, with the likes of Alfie Jones, Regan Slater and Ryan Giles featuring.

Sheffield Wednesday were all action from kick-off though, taking the lead through Charlie McNeill after only one minute.

It was only eight minutes later that the Tigers equalised, but their celebrations were ended abruptly when McNeill claimed his brace just one minute later.

It was an excellent debut for the youngster, who was expected to become a second or third choice striker at Hillsborough. However, he will have raised plenty of eyebrows with his performance tonight.

Charlie McNeill was on fire in front of goal

As per sofascore, McNeill racked up more shots than any other player on the pitch (5), had 23 touches, won one free-kick and completed 75% of his long balls.

He has already received plenty of praise for his two goals, with The Star hailing him for his ‘stunning start’, as well as finishing his opener with ‘real class’.

His brace means he has already matched his previous best total in a senior season, having netted twice in 20 matches for Newport County.

The striker will have given Danny Rohl more to think about than expected

It was a standout debut for the former Manchester United attacker and one that many fans won’t have expected.

While it is just in the Carabao Cup, McNeill impressed against Championship opponents and it was against a team full of senior players.

The 20-year-old was always going to have to do a lot to force his way into the senior team, but he has definitely done himself a huge favour with his performance at Hull.

McNeill is unlikely to claw his way past Ike Ugbo in the pecking order, but he has definitely given Danny Rohl a lot to think about and is a lot more likely to be given cameo appearances now that he has shown what he is capable of.

The forward’s switch to Yorkshire raised many questions, but it hasn’t taken him very long to shut the doubters up and it took Rohl even less time to help get the best out of him.

McNeill’s display may give the German a lot more hope that he has the squad depth needed in his frontline to help earn a top half finish.

Rohl will expect to still heavily rely on Ugbo, but McNeill has shown he can be relied upon too and will have definitely given him something to consider as they return to Championship action.
