Sheffield Wednesday have now won their first two games of the 2024/25 season.

Following Sheffield Wednesday’s opening day 4-0 win vs Plymouth Argyle, Danny Rohl took his new-look side to Hull City.

Rohl made 11 changes to his Sheffield Wednesday XI vs Hull City; completely changing the side that beat Plymouth and handing debuts to the likes of Charlie McNeill and Olaf Kobacki.

Both impressed, with McNeill on the score-sheet after 20 seconds and then again after 10 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday looked a little less impressive in the second half. Hull City did more attacking after the break but Wednesday were resolute.

Sean Fusire shines for Sheffield Wednesday vs Hull City

One player who made a rare appearance in the win over Hull City was Sean Fusire.

The Sheffield Wednesday academy man made just his third first-team appearance for the club, though despite his experience, Fusire shone.

The 19-year-old looked powerful and calm in possession, especially so in the first half where he started alongside veteran Liam Palmer.

The youngster recorded 49 touches of the ball and completed 22/27 passes (81%), with Fusire also attempting and winning more duels than any player on the pitch (10 won out of 16).

Sheffield Wednesday fans liked what they saw of Fusire against Hull City, with one fan posting on social media: “Thought Fusire was absolutely superb this evening very promising.”

Another added: “Fusire, what a little diamond in the rough he might be.

“Shaky on the ball first 45 but crikey, didn’t shirk a challenge, imposed himself throughout for the full 90 and looked so comfortable come the end.”

Others described Fusire as “immense”, a “top player”, and even “future captain material”, with another posting: “Fusire has been excellent, not given the ball away once, really impressed.”

Sean Fusire bursting on the scene at a bad time for Sheffield Wednesday

Having academy players break through and impress with the first-team is always welcome.

Though Fusire’s breakthrough may cause the club and Rohl a bit of a headache in the next couple of weeks, with Sheffield Wednesday keen on signing a new central midfielder.

Sheffield Wednesday are linked with Malick Yalcouye at Brighton, with Fortuna Sittard’s Loreintz Rosier another name linked ahead of the August 30th deadline.

What another central midfield signing might mean for Fusire’s season ahead remains to be see.

But he’s certainly done his chances of more first-team exposure no harm with what was a confident performance, even if he looked a bit more tiresome in the second half.
