Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to secure a late victory away at Coventry City.

Danny Rohl’s men came into this game on the back of a confidence-boosting 3-2 win over West Brom and a goalless draw at Bristol City.

In the build-up to this clash, Coventry City boss Mark Robins was full of praise for Rohl’s exciting style at Sheffield Wednesday while Sam Parkin predicted the Owls to win 2-1.

Parkin will have been delighted to see that his scoreline was exactly correct as Wednesday showed their powers of recovery to turn around a one-goal deficit.

The visitors went behind in the first half thanks to a drilled effort from Jack Rudoni before Djeidi Gassama responded on the stroke of half-time with a powerful strike into the top right corner.

The score would remain level right till the very end when Rohl was rewarded for his attacking substitutions, with Anthony Musaba assisting midfielder Shea Charles for his first goal in Wednesday colours, calmly slotting the ball past Ben Wilson.

Sheffield Wednesday fans react to Shea Charles display vs Coventry City

Sheffield Wednesday captured Shea Charles on a season-long from Southampton in the summer.

Charles has looked incredibly ‘impressive’ in the Wednesday midfield, with the Northern Ireland international producing some colossal performances.

As a result, there were fears that Charles could be recalled by Southampton in the January transfer window, and those fears will have been heightened after his performance against Coventry.

Not only did he steal the headlines with his winning goal but he also controlled the midfield, winning four ground duels, completing two dribbles and recording an xG of 0.83.

There’s no wonder that Wednesday fans were left in awe of the 20-year-old, with one supporter writing: “I know you shouldn’t fall in love with loan players but I think Shea Charles is best player ive ever seen play football.”

“Shea Charles what an absolute engine, back-to-back away 90’s and sprinting past everyone In the last minute to win the game and finish so calmly as he did,” another responded.

“Shea Charles been outstanding last few games,” a third said.

“Shea Charles is just a wonderful, wonderful footballer,” a fifth replied.

“Shea Charles has potentially already become my favourite ever loan, closely rivalled by Mcguinnes and Hector. He’s some player and exactly what our midfield has been crying out for since Luongo left, athleticism and tenacity,” a sixth said.

Shea Charles has filled key void at Sheffield Wednesday

Charles is still only 20 but he’s come into the Sheffield Wednesday midfield and filled a position that looked in the summer.

It became clear that Rohl needed a combative presence to sit in front of the defence following the departure of Will Vaulks in the summer, and while he’s played that role superbly, he’s now showing his class at the other end.

He’s complimented a defensive steeliness with composure and incredible attacking threat, as shown with his winning goal at Coventry.

Charles still had enough energy in his tank at the end of the game to run 70 yards up the pitch and have the presence of mind to slot a composed effort past Wilson.

It was the finish of a man who is oozing with confidence at the moment, and everyone will be hoping Southampton don’t recall him in January.
