Sheffield Wednesday may already have two summer targets in mind as we near the end of the season.
Of course for Sheffield Wednesday, the main aim right now is pulling themselves out of the Championship relegation zone.
With 12 games left, the Owls have what is currently a three point gap to safety, with a trip to bottom club Rotherham United on the agenda this weekend.
Then come the summer, the club will have some big calls to make; the future of Danny Rohl will no doubt be a huge talking point if Sheffield Wednesday go down, with the Owls also facing another summer rebuild in the transfer market.
But one player already said to be on Rohl’s wishlist is Leeds United loan man Ian Poveda who is thought to be out of contract in the summer.
Fellow January arrival Ike Ugbo will also undoubtedly be in the thinking too after scoring five in his first seven Championship appearances for Wednesday.
Dom Howson gives Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda verdict
Taking to X this morning, journalist Dom Howson gave his verdict on loan duo Ugbo and Poveda.
Howson believes it would be ‘tricky’ for Sheffield Wednesday to re-sign the pair in the summer, with both currently impressing at Hillsborough.
Howson says they’ve ‘put themselves in the shop window’ and that there’s ‘bound to be other clubs monitoring them’ ahead of the summer transfer window.
Danny Rohl may be the deciding factor for Ugbo and Poveda
Both Ugbo and Poveda have had quite difficult careers so far.
Both have had spells where they’ve impressed, though both have had their share of rough patches.
But right now, they’re shining for Sheffield Wednesday under Rohl and both may be keen for that continue beyond this season.
For Ugbo it might be slightly more complicated as he still has a contract at Troyes, but for Poveda who’s options will open up if he’s released by Leeds this summer, it could be an easier decision.
And both players could be more inclined to stay in S6 if they know Rohl will be staying on at the club; that, though, will largely depend on how the club fares in the final run-in.
If Sheffield Wednesday stay up then it seems highly like that Rohl, who’s developed a strong relationship with the club and its fanbase, stays.
And in turn, that could tempt a lot of the club’s out-of-contract players as well as Ugbo and Poveda to stay on for at least another year.
Sheffield Wednesday return to action away at Rotherham United this weekend, in what is another huge game in their bid for survival.
