Sheffield Wednesday are in store for another hectic summer transfer window, regardless of what division they’re in.
The Owls have a number of first-team players out of contract, though Danny Rohl wants to keep a selection of them.
There’s also a few loan players who the German coach might be keen on keeping; goal-hero Ike Ugbo will no doubt come into the thinking, but right now it’s Ian Poveda that Rohl wants.
Danny Rohl wants permanent deal for Leeds United man Ian Poveda
Poveda has been a hit with the Sheffield Wednesday fans since arriving on loan from Leeds United on deadline day.
The 24-year-old Colombian international has now made five Championship appearances for the Owls, starting the last four and impressing in the 2-1 win over Bristol City last time out.
BBC reporter Rob Staton labelled Poveda as ‘excellent’ that day; in five Games Poveda has one assist for Wednesday.
The Star are now reporting that Sheffield Wednesday initially wanted a permanent deal for Poveda, but that it was changed to a loan deal at the last minute.
The same report also adds that Rohl is now keen to make Poveda a permanent Wednesday player in the summer, with his Leeds United contract thought to be coming to an end.
Sheffield Wednesday need Poveda magic on long-term basis
Poveda has certainly added something to the Sheffield Wednesday side that Rohl didn’t have before.
He brings that extra bit of flair in attack. He’s a player who can produce special moments in games, with his close control, trickery, and dribbling skills making him a nuisance for opposition defenders.
It’s no coincidence that the Owls have won three of the four games he’s started, scoring two goals in each of those three wins.
What’s more is that; with players like Josh Windass out of contract in the summer, should Poveda leave as well, Rohl would have nobody able to play that no.10 role, but Poveda is versatile too, capable of playing out on the flanks as well.
With his contract out in the summer and Leeds United looking like the could earn promotion, Poveda looks as though he’ll be let go, and if Sheffield Wednesday stay in the Championship then a permanent deal for Poveda could make a lot of sense for everyone involved.
Wednesday head to Rotherham United in the Championship this weekend; a win for the Owls could bring them level on points with QPR who currently sit in 21st place of the table, as they go up against Leicester City.
