A key Sheffield Wednesday man is now attracting attention from other Championship clubs.
Despite a long list of players’ contracts expiring this summer, Sheffield Wednesday have done particularly well to keep hold of all their most important players.
Josh Windass and Liam Palmer were both linked with moves to the MLS, but always looked likely to remain at Hillsborough until at least the end of the season.
Marvin Johnson was arguably the only tricky one, with the 33-year-old being subject to a £1 million bid from Ipswich Town in January.
However, the Owls kept hold of Johnson and instead only offloaded Tyreeq Bakinson and George Byers on loan.
Sheffield Wednesday’s concerning contract situation could mean they lose a number of stars this summer though, while others may follow them out the door if they fail to retain their Championship status.
While we could potentially see the likes of Windass, Di’Shon Bernard and Dominic Iorfa leave on a free transfer, the future of manager Danny Rohl is probably the most important.
The German coach moved to England for the first managerial stint on his career in October and has so far completely transformed the team and have put them in a brilliant position to avoid relegation.
However, Rohl’s future at the club could also depend on their position in the football pyramid.
The 34-year-old is building up a very promising reputation for himself in Sheffield, which may come back to bite them.
According to The Star, Rohl is the ‘subject of admiration’ from other clubs in the Championship, while they believe he could well be catching the eye in his home country of Germany too.
What will it take to lure Danny Rohl away?
Danny Rohl clearly loves Sheffield Wednesday and has a strong relationship with the supporters, but could he be tempted to leave if offered a brilliant opportunity elsewhere?
I think the only way Rohl would leave Hillsborough at the end of the season is if they were relegated. The German understands the potential this club has and I wouldn’t put it past him to guide the team to a much higher position next season if he stays.
However, if they drop down to League One and he is offered a managerial position at a club that are fighting for the Championship playoffs, then he may be daft to not take it.
A return to Germany could also be tempting for Rohl, though perhaps he has ambitions to reach the Premier League over the next few years.
There are so many factors to Rohl’s future in management, but Sheffield Wednesday really just need to appreciate what they have now, because he isn’t going to be around forever.
