Danny Rohl has now provided a transfer update on a ‘fantastic’ Sheffield Wednesday player.
Sheffield Wednesday have so far waved goodbye to three players this month, with Tyreeq Bakinson joining Charlton Athletic on loan, while John Buckley and Devis Vasquez have returned to their parent clubs early.
The Owls have also received plenty of interest in some of their own players too though, with the likes of Josh Windass and Liam Palmer linked with moves to the MLS, while Michael Smith looks set to join Derby County.
One player whose future remains up in the air is Marvin Johnson, with the club rejecting a £1 million bid from Ipswich Town for his signature last week.
The 33-year-old is said to see Ipswich as his ‘dream move’, with the potential of playing in the Premier League if Kieran McKenna’s side win promotion this season.
While it looked like Sheffield Wednesday really didn’t want to lose Johnson in January, Danny Rohl has now admitted that they may have to ‘prepare’ to lose him.
Speaking to The Star, the Owls coach said: “This is a moment in the transfer window and it doesn’t mean there is immediately a move in one direction or another direction. We can look, we have some days where we can do something and decide what is best for the team. This is our job as a club and we have to prepare in both directions.
“In the transfer window anything is possible in both directions. What is clear is that he is a starter at the moment, he has a lot of running forward, he has made improvements in defence and he is a good left full-back for us and he is helpful. In the end some decisions are on the other table, not my table.
“Marvin did well and gave us a good impact, he tried everything and was fantastic,” Röhl continued. “I have had a lot of talks and conversations with my players in the last days, this is important. It is about the games. Especially with Marvin, I have a good relationship. I brought him back on track.
“In October he was far away from the team and now he has performed well, he showed his performance and his attitude and this was so important for me. It is a good sign and we will see what we can do. He is a fantastic player in fantastic shape.”
Should Sheffield Wednesday keep hold of Marvin Johnson?
Marvin Johnson may be getting on a bit now, but he has still been a very important figure in Sheffield Wednesday’s battle against relegation, picking up four goal contributions over a successful festive period.
The winger has also played the full 90 minutes of The Owls’ seven games, so his exit would clearly be a huge loss to the team.
Sheffield Wednesday can’t afford to be losing key players going into the second half of the campaign, but there is no doubt that a higher bid will tempt them.
It’s unclear how long Johnson’s contract extension was last summer, but if he has already entered the final six months of his deal then a seven-figure fee would be hard to turn down.
