A journalist has reported that Sheffield Wednesday are close to offloading a player this month.
Sheffield Wednesday have already been very busy in the January transfer window, snapping up Brighton goalkeeper James Beadle and Troyes forward Ike Ugbo.
However, The Owls know they need to move a number of players on in order to bring fresh faces into their squad, but are yet to show a single player the exit door.
They now look to be closing in their first exit though, with journalist Darren Witcoop claiming that Michael Smith’s January exit will ‘get done’ this month.
Smith bagged 16 goals and six assists in League One last season, however competition for places and injury problems has seen him struggle for minutes since their promotion to the second tier.
The 32-year-old has managed only seven league starts this term, while he was left on the bench as an unused substitute in the 4-0 defeat to Southampton last time out.
As a result, Smith had been heavily linked with a move away and Derby County were said to be one club interested in their summer target.
Witcoop has stated that Sheffield Wednesday needed to bring in a replacement before they could sell Smith, and the arrival of Ike Ugbo is now likely to mean the veteran attacker can leave Hillsborough in the coming weeks.

Sheffield Wednesday have been working hard on improving their frontline this season, with Ike Ugbo likely to get a chance to challenge for Bailey Cadamarteri‘s spot in the team.
But the looming departures of Michael Smith and Lee Gregory could leave The Owls short, which would suggest another arrival is on its way.
Journalist Alan Nixon recently confirmed that Dejphon Chansiri is still eager to splash out on a top forward, but Danny Rohl has a huge task on his hands finding someone of high quality that will complete a move to the Yorkshire outfit.
Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with top-earner Scott Hogan, who has managed only one goal in the Championship this season, but netted 20 across the past two.
The Owls are still looking to bolster other areas of the pitch too though, having missed out on Conor Coventry to Charlton Athletic.
