Three Sheffield Wednesday players who have simply not been good enough for Danny Rohl this season

A few Sheffield Wednesday players need to step up to keep their place under Danny Rohl.

It has been a mixed start to the 2024/25 Championship season for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday smashed Plymouth Argyle 4-0 in their first Championship fixture of the season.

Big things were then expected of Danny Rohl and co. but what followed was a rather disappointing run that saw the Owls go on a five-game winless run.

Sheffield Wednesday beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 to end that unwanted run of form and have since picked up a 0-0 draw with Bristol City in a 2-1 win over Coventry City.

That has seen the Yorkshire outfit move away from the relegation zone and climb up to 15th in the Championship table.

While the squad’s form has improved on the whole though, a few Sheffield Wednesday players have simply been not good enough for much of 2024/25 so far.

Ike Ugbo

After a long transfer saga, Sheffield Wednesday signed Ike Ugbo for £3m during the 2024 summer window and big things were expected after his permanent return to Hillsborough.

However, after just nine league games, it is already clear that Ugbo is at risk of becoming a flop.

The striker had just 12 touches in the win over West Brom and was relegated to the bench last time out versus Coventry – coming on for the final 27 minutes.

Ugbo is still yet to score a league goal for Wednesday in 2024/25 and will have to start performing sooner rather than later if he does not want to lose his place come the January window when Rohl may look for more striking reinforcements.

Max Lowe

One of the more surprising additions in Yorkshire over the summer saw Max Lowe swap Sheffield United for Wednesday.

After the deal was completed, Rohl was told Lowe is one of the best players in the Championship when fit.

However, the full-back has so far failed to live up to that hype, losing his starting berth to Marvin Johnson after just a few games.

Lowe is one of the lowest-rated Sheffield Wednesday players on WhoScored with the defender earning a dismal 6.31 average from his first seven appearances.

James Beadle

James Beadle being included on this list may seem somewhat harsh given some of his displays so far this season.

Dom Howson backed Beadle to go to the top after making several top saves against Bristol City recently.

However, Beadle himself admitted that he ‘probably’ hasn’t been at his best this season.

The 20-year-old has kept two clean sheets in nine Championship outings, shipping a concerning 15 goals in the other seven fixtures.
