Sheffield Wednesday could see yet more squad turnover in August, with the transfer deadline at the end of the month.
The summer transfer window will officially close for business on August 30th.
For Sheffield Wednesday, whether any new names arrive or not, it’s been a wholly positive summer transfer window with nine new players having arrived.
It comes amid a new wave of ambition and apparent longer-term planning from owner Dejphon Chansiri who’s earned praise from Sheffield Wednesday fans this summer.
Manager Danny Rohl is also overseeing the positive changes at Hillsborough, with more likely to follow in the transfer market this month.
There’s also a strong chance that we see some names leave S6 in the coming weeks, though, and here we look at who might be moving on from Sheffield Wednesday in August, either on loan or on a permanent basis…
Bailey Cadamarteri – loan
There’s a lot of talk about Bailey Cadamarteri at the moment, and whether or not he’ll be loaned out of Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
After his breakthrough last season, game-time looks like it might be harder to come by next season, especially if Sheffield Wednesday re-sign Ike Ugbo.
There’s EFL interest in Cadamarteri already, though his possible loan exit might come later in the window; if or when Sheffield Wednesday have signed a new striker.
Mallik Wilks – permanent
Game time may also be very hard to come by for Cadamarteri’s attacking partner Mallik Wilks.
The 25-year-old featured just 15 times in the Championship last season and failed to score or assist a goal.
He’s featured sporadically in pre-season and is thought to be carrying some kind of knock too.
Like with Cadamarteri, if another attacker arrives in S6 this summer, Wilks could be moved on, but likely on a permanent basis.
Pierce Charles – loan
Another in the same boat as Cadamarteri is young goalkeeper Pierce Charles.
The Northern Ireland U19s man has impressed since making his first-team debut last season, and the Sheffield Wednesday players think highly of Charles.
Crawley have enquired about signing Charles on loan but right now, Rohl isn’t interested, given the injury to no.2 goalkeeper Ben Hamer.
As and when Hamer returns, Charles may be pushing for a loan exit so that he can get game time, and that would certainly be in the best interest of the Owls too.
Michael Smith – permanent
Striker Michael Smith had a tough 2023/24 season, largely being unfavoured by Rohl but coming into the fold more so towards the end of the season.
In the end, he scored four Championship goals. There’s online speculation that Rotherham United are interested in Smith, but Millers boss Steve Evans has played down interest in Smith.
If Chansiri fancies clearing some space on the wage bill and making a bit of money back, especially so if an expensive striker signing is made, Smith is one who could be moved on.
Gui Siqueira – loan
Another exciting Sheffield Wednesday youngster making an impression right now is right-back Gui Siqueira.
He too made his first-team debut last season, but he too may find game-time chances limited in 2024/25, especially so following the arrival of Yan Valery at right-back.
A lower league loan move may be ideal for Siqueira if the right club is found.
Callum Paterson – permanent
Like Smith, Callum Paterson has been in and out of the XI since Rohl took charge, largely because of injury.
But he’s a player held in high regards by fans and by Rohl too, with Paterson showing his versatility and work ethic upon his return from injury last season.
Right now though, there’s not really a spot in the starting XI for Paterson who’s largely viewed as a back-up player in different positions on the pitch, and also as something of an impact player late in games.
Out of contract in 2025, Paterson is one who could be sold this summer to make a bit of money back in the transfer market.
