Sheffield Wednesday could have a few tough calls to make in January next year.

Sheffield Wednesday have a number of players out of contract next summer.

Although a lot of players’ contract lengths at Wednesday aren’t officially disclosed, it’s widely thought that the likes of Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer signed one-year deals during the summer window.

Elsewhere, the likes of Michael Smith and Pierce Charles are out of contract too, so there’s a few decisions for the club to weigh up.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Danny Rohl revealed that contract talks are already underway and that he, head of recruitment Kevin Beadell, and owner Dejphon Chansiri are set for player contract talks in the coming weeks.

And one player who may be high up on the agenda is Pol Valentin.

The Spaniard has recently been linked with Maccabi Tel Aviv, but it’s since been revealed that Wednesday have rebuffed an approach from the Israeli side for Valentin.

Pol Valentin Sheffield Wednesday contract

Sheffield Wednesday signed Valentin in the summer of 2023, paying a small undisclosed fee to Spanish outfit Sporting Gijon.

He eventually became a key player for the Owls, going on to feature 36 times in the Championship last season.

Valentin signed a two-year deal at Hillsborough meaning that he’s out of contract at the end of this season.

There’s been no talks of a renewal for the 27-year-old, and with Sheffield Wednesday signing Yan Valery in the summer, it’s pushed Valentin out of the XI.

For the Owls, whether or not to sell Valentin in January may become a difficult call.

He’s out of contract next summer and has transfer interest, so if Wednesday don’t want to offer him a new deal then selling him makes financial sense.

Keeping him though would make sense from a team perspective for Rohl.

That said, whether or not Valentin wants to stay remains to be seen.

He may well have had his head turned by interest from elsewhere and he could already be eyeing up an exit form S6, either in January or next summer.

Valentin is well-liked and seems to be very happy at Sheffield Wednesday, and he could quickly make his way back into the XI with Valery having received mixed reviews.

Valentin’s future is going to be one of several tough calls to be made in S6.
