For Sheffield Wednesday, the 2024/25 Championship season so far has been very mixed. But there’s still been plenty of positives.

For this November international break, Sheffield Wednesday sit in 15th place of the Championship table, and just three points above the drop zone.

Despite some very mixed results for Danny Rohl’s side so far, there’s evident improvements to the club’s fortunes compared to this time last year.

The Owls had just one win at this time last season, compared to five wins already this season, and 18 points on the board compared to six last season.

Ahead of the return of Championship football this weekend, we dish out some mid-season awards for Sheffield Wednesday…

Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Season so far

There’s a few contenders for this award, though it feels like Barry Bannan edges the title of Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Season so far.

The Scot has really stood out once again. Despite some iffy performances towards the very start of the season, Bannan has been very effective in the Championship with two goals and an assist in 15 games.

Bannan’s Sheffield Wednesday future remains uncertain, though his performances in the last few weeks certainly warrant another year or two.

Sheffield Wednesday’s best summer signing so far

There’s a clear winner for this title, and it’s Shea Charles. The loan man from Southampton has made the Owls a much better team, also allowing Bannan to roam forward more often as well.

He’s plugged what was a void in front of the defence. Northern Ireland skipper Charles plays with quality and maturity well beyond his 21 years, and when he eventually leaves Hillsborough, he’s going to be hard to replace.

Sheffield Wednesday’s worst summer signing so far

A tough award to dish out, especially with there being a handful of summer signings who haven’t hit the ground running, or in the case of Nathanial Chalobah and Charlie McNeill, haven’t even played in the league yet.

But we give this label to Ike Ugbo, simply because of how impressive he was in the second half of last season compared to how much he’s struggled this time round.

Rohl defends Ugbo’s form at Sheffield Wednesday but the penny has to drop sooner or later. Fans retain hope that the penny will soon drop after Ugbo proved his Championship ability last time round.

Sheffield Wednesday’s most improved player this season

Akin Famewo. By far and away, the defender feels like the one Sheffield Wednesday player who’s considerably upped his game from last season.

Famewo is currently injured for Sheffield Wednesday and it comes as a huge blow for both him and the team as a whole.

But Sheffield Wednesday want a new contract for Famewo whose current deal expires next summer. If he returns fit and firing, he should still get that new deal.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Goal of the Season so far

Only one goal comes to mind for this award, and that’s Michael Smith’s screamer against Portsmouth in October.

Smith bent a rocket into the top right corner to seal the comeback win in what was a Man of the Match performance from Smith at Fratton Park.

That strike was also named the Championship Goal of the Month for October.
