Danny Rohl transfer comments point to alarming 2025 issue at Sheffield Wednesday

Danny Rohl made a very interesting transfer comment before Sheffield Wednesday lost against Luton Town over the weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday were very unlucky to lose in their last Championship outing.

The Owls were 1-0 up against Luton Town but eventually lost the game 2-1, with the refereeing decisions during the game coming under scrutiny.

Di’Shon Bernard was sent off for an apparent handball, with the sending off leading to Luton’s eventual win on the day.

Sheffield Wednesday remain winless since their opening day win vs Plymouth Argyle and take on league leaders West Brom at Hillsborough this weekend.

And whilst fans are focused mainly on the here and now, manager Danny Rohl retains a view to the long-term at the club.

Before the game against Luton, the German said that he has a vision for the upcoming two transfer windows.

Rohl said: “Even the next window, it’s a little bit far away, but even now I have clear idea in my mind what we have to do in the next two windows.”

Sheffield Wednesday transfer business in the 2025 summer window

By all accounts, Wednesday enjoyed a strong summer transfer window.

The Owls started fast and brought in eight new players before they set off on their pre-season tour of Austria and Germany.

One more signing followed, the loan signing of Shea Charles from Southampton, which capped their summer transfer window.

Despite what seemed like a very strong window, Sheffield Wednesday don’t look as strong as they did during the second half of last season.

There’s still gaps in the side. But Rohl knows that the project undertaken in S6 isn’t a short-term one, with the next two transfer windows feeling like a minimum before we start to see proper results.

What Sheffield Wednesday need to do in the next two transfer windows

What Rohl has planned for the next two windows remains a mystery. But it feels certain that he’ll have an eye on his players out of contract in 2025.

Before the Luton game, Rohl even said:

“I had yesterday a talk with Kevin [Beadell, head of recruitment], now we will speak with the chairman about this.

“Which players we want to extend, which players we can extend, which player wants to extend, and then of course you will have some players, maybe where you speak in detail in January, not now, to see how’s the process.”

Some of those thought to be out of contract in 2025 are long-term duo Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer, along with names like Michael Smith and Pierce Charles among others.

And a main focus for Rohl should be, and likely will be, on replacing those out of contract.

Bannan is a focal point in this side and replacing him is surely high in Rohl’s thinking now, whilst replacing his and Palmer’s experience will also be key

At the same time, Wednesday have an ageing squad, and so replacing some of the older players with younger ones should also be a key area of focus.

And that feels like the tip of the iceberg for Sheffield Wednesday and Rohl where the next two windows are conceded.

There’s James Beadle leaving when his loan finished, and Shea Charles also leaving, a lack of centre-backs, and right now a lack of firepower.

But replacing those leaving next summer certainly feels like a priority for Rohl looking forward.
