Danny Rohl can achieve incredible Sheffield Wednesday feat that only Darren Moore has accomplished since 2000

Spirits are high around Sheffield Wednesday after their win over Derby County at the weekend, and now, Danny Rohl could eye a huge feat with the club.

Sheffield Wednesday battled back from a goal down to beat Derby at Pride Park on Sunday afternoon, and in turn, registered their first back-to-back wins of the campaign.

Danny Rohl was naturally delighted with his players’ efforts, and the Sheffield Wednesday manager has outlined just how much progress the team has made over the last year.

Now, with the Owls climbing the Championship table, the next few games could be crucial, and could help Rohl do something only one other Wednesday boss has achieved since the turn of the century.

Sheffield Wednesday have only gone unbeaten in December once this century

If Rohl’s side can avoid defeat throughout the month of December, they will achieve something that only Darren Moore has previously done in the last 24 years.

Moore, of course, presided over that incredible 23-game unbeaten run stretching from October 8, 2022, through to March 17, 2023, which played a huge part in getting the Owls promoted that season.

That run was brought to an end by Barnsley, the team Wednesday ultimately beat in the play-off final just two months later. But, during that time, the Owls registered huge wins over Burton Albion, Cambridge United, and MK Dons.

The caveat here, though, is that Moore managed this feat in League One. Still, it’s the only instance of Sheffield Wednesday enjoying an unbeaten run through the festive period this side of the millennium, and that has to be applauded.

Middlesbrough will be the biggest test for Sheffield Wednesday this month

Now, we’re not expecting Rohl to touch that epic 23-game unbeaten run anytime soon, but a December without defeat is very much a possibility, especially given the momentum the Owls have behind them right now.

It’s a busy month in the Championship, but one that presents Sheffield Wednesday with a potentially season-defining run of fixtures over the next six games.

The Owls will have to look at the likes of Preston North End — whom they play home and away this month — Oxford United, and Stoke City as absolute must-wins. Those three teams are all below Wednesday right now, and have not exactly set the world alight this season.

They’re exactly the kinds of teams Rohl’s side have to beat if they want to push on and become a midtable team this year, or better. However, the challenge of Blackburn Rovers is one to watch.

The Lancashire outfit are currently eighth in the Championship table, but have the chance to break into the play-offs if they win their game in hand. However, Wednesday did the double over Blackburn last season, and will have nothing to fear there, especially at Hillsborough.

No, the only team that can really spoil the party for Rohl in his efforts to go the month unbeaten are Middlesbrough. An away trip to the Riverside on Boxing Day is a daunting task, against one of the most in-form sides in the league, and a team that look destined for at least a play-off spot this season.

Still, even if that unbeaten run doesn’t come to fruition, positive results from the other five games would have Sheffield Wednesday looking like genuine ‘outsiders’ for a sneaky promotion push. But, let’s not get carried away just yet.
