Sheffield Wednesday have handed Junior Kamwa a professional contract, following the winger’s trial period with the club.

Sheffield Wednesday have added 18-year-old attacker Junior Kamwa to their youth ranks after the former Bradford City youngster spent time on trial with the Owls.

In mid-October, it was revealed that Sheffield Wednesday had taken Kamwa on trial, and he’s been featuring regularly for the U21s in recent weeks.

Here we take a closer look at the Owls’ latest new signing…

Junior Kamwa’s career so far

Kamwa spent all of his career before signing for Wednesday with Yorkshire rivals Bradford City. He never made a first-team appearance for the club but did feature once in the FA Youth Cup.

Kamwa was actually released by Bradford City in the summer. But in the past, he’s garnered some attention on social media for his tricky runs and performances with the Bantams’ youth sides.

Footage of Junior Kamwa in action

Popular X account The Secret Scout posted footage of Kamwa playing for Bradford City’s U16s back in 2022.

The footage showed Kamwa’s pacey nature on the flank, his trickery and his ability to beat players with the ball.

What’s been said about Junior Kamwa’s move to Sheffield Wednesday?

Speaking to the club, Kamwa shared his delight at penning his first professional contract in football.

He said: “I’m delighted, I’ve worked hard for it. I’ve been waiting to get my first professional contract and it’s a proud day for me and my family, and now I want to push on.

“I’ve been here for a few weeks and the boys have helped me adapt and get into it. The coaches and players have taken me in really well, so I’m really happy with how it’s going.

“I think I bring something different to the team, I’m a direct winger and I like to use tricks, beat my man and create chances. I want to push on now with the 21s and see where that takes me.”

And academy boss Steve Haslam then gave a brief description of the kind of player Kamwa is, saying: “He’s an attacking player, capable of playing off both flanks and he adds to what we have at Under-21 level.”

Junior Kamwa looks a lot like one Sheffield Wednesday player

Looking at the footage of Kamwa, it seems as though he shares a lot of similar traits to Anthony Musaba.

Both players are very powerful on the ball, able to beat their man and drive forward, which is ideal for a Danny Rohl side that can launch very fast counter-attacks.

Like Kamwa says, though, now it’s about progressing with the U21s. If he can do that then he’ll quickly get himself into Rohl’s thoughts for a first-team spot.

The likes of Gabriel Otegbayo and Sean Fusire have made the step up this season and so there’s a clear pathway for the Owls youngsters to eventually earn first-team minutes.
